Black Sex Link Started Pullet

Breed Overview and Hybrid Background

Black Sex Link chickens are bred for optimal egg production, vitality, and adaptability. This hybrid breed is created by crossing a Cackle Hatchery® Rhode Island Red rooster with a superior Barred Rock hen. The result is a sex-link chicken known for easy chick sexing, strong growth, and dependable brown egg production.

Because Black Sex Links are hybrids, they are not a heritage breed or pure breed in the same way as Rhode Island Reds or Barred Rocks. Instead, they are a practical production cross designed to give customers a hardy, efficient, easy-to-raise brown egg layer.

Customers who want to raise this hybrid from day-old chicks can compare Cackle’s Black Sex Link chicks.

Appearance and Characteristics

Black Sex Link hens are primarily black with attractive red highlights in the neck hackle feathers. This gives mature pullets and hens a rich, eye-catching look in the flock.

Roosters from the same cross have a lighter barred pattern with pale neck hackle feathers. This color difference is part of what makes the sex-link cross useful for easy chick sexing. Cackle’s Black Sex Link chick information explains that grown pullets or hens are black with red mixed in their neck hackle feathers, while roosters are faded barred with light-colored neck hackle feathers.

These started pullets have already been raised with other birds, which can help them transition into backyard flock life when introduced carefully.

Egg Production and Backyard Value

Black Sex Link chickens are known for impressive egg-laying ability. They consistently produce medium to large brown eggs and are a favorite for customers who want a dependable backyard layer.

This hybrid is often a good fit for beginners and experienced poultry keepers because it combines strong egg production, hardiness, and adaptability. Since these started pullets are already 15 to 22 weeks old, they may begin laying sooner after arrival than day-old chicks, depending on their age, season, daylight, nutrition, and individual development.

Customers comparing brown egg layers can browse Cackle’s Brown Egg Layer Chickens or Egg Laying Chickens categories.

Temperament and Ease of Care

Black Sex Link chickens are generally easy to manage, making them a popular choice for backyard flocks. Their hardy nature helps them adapt to many climates, coops, and management styles.

These started pullets have had human interaction early in life, which can help make them less flighty. They have also been raised in large areas with other birds, making them a practical addition to a backyard flock when introduced properly.

As with any new chicken, customers should introduce them slowly, provide enough space, monitor pecking order behavior, and keep feed and water easy to access during the adjustment period.

Free-Range and Flock Use

Black Sex Link chickens can do well in free-range environments. They are active enough to forage, yet still practical for coops, chicken tractors, and backyard runs.

Cackle’s sex-link hybrid blog notes that Black Sex Link hens can mature to 6 or 7 pounds and may lay somewhere between 200 and 280 eggs per year. The same blog also notes that their darker color can make them less visible to predators than lighter-colored breeds, which helps explain why many customers like them for free-range flocks.

Even with good free-range ability, customers should still provide secure nighttime housing, predator protection, clean water, and a balanced layer ration once the pullets are ready to lay.

Black Sex Link Started Pullet vs Day-Old Chicks

Choose a started pullet if you want an older female bird that is closer to laying age and already past the brooder stage.

Choose day-old Black Sex Link chicks if you want a lower starting price, more order flexibility, or the experience of raising chicks from the beginning.

Started pullets are especially useful for customers who want eggs sooner and do not want to manage heat lamps, brooders, and early chick care.

Black Sex Link vs Red Sex Link

Black Sex Links and Red Sex Link chickens are both hybrid layers bred for practical egg production. Both are designed to be easy to raise and strong brown egg producers.

Choose Black Sex Link if you want a mostly black hen with red hackle highlights, a Rhode Island Red and Barred Rock background, and a hardy brown egg layer. Choose Red Sex Link if you prefer the red and white coloring of that hybrid cross.

Customers interested in older female birds may also compare Red Sex Link Started Pullets.

Black Sex Link vs Barred Rock

The Black Sex Link hybrid uses Barred Rock hens in its parent cross, but it is not the same as a pure Barred Rock.

Choose Black Sex Link if your main goal is practical hybrid egg production and easy chick sexing. Choose Barred Rock chicks or Barred Rock Started Pullets if you want the classic barred pure breed known as the Barred Plymouth Rock.

Both are good backyard options, but Black Sex Links are specifically bred as production hybrids, while Barred Rocks are a traditional breed.

Started Pullet Guarantee and Refund Note

Because started pullets are live juvenile birds, customers should be ready to receive them promptly and move them into safe, prepared housing. Provide water immediately, keep the environment calm, and allow time for the birds to adjust after shipping.
