Black Australorp Started Pullet

Product Overview

The Black Australorp Started Pullet is a 15 to 22 week old female chicken that is close to laying age and ready to become a productive addition to your backyard flock. This is a strong choice for customers who want a calm, hardy brown egg layer without raising day-old chicks.

Cackle Hatchery® offers Black Australorp Started Pullets as older female birds. Each pullet is priced at $46.00, with a maximum of 2 per order only.

Shipping and handling charges are:

1 bird: $231.00
2 birds: $276.00

These started pullets are vaccinated for Marek’s disease at no additional charge. They are fed non-GMO feed from day one, raised with human interaction to help reduce flightiness, and grown in large areas with other birds. Cackle’s grown fowl category confirms that all started pullets are 15 to 22 weeks old and vaccinated for Marek’s disease at no added cost.

Why Choose Started Pullets?

Started pullets are ideal for customers who want female chickens that are already past the baby chick stage. Since these birds are 15 to 22 weeks old, they are much closer to laying age than day-old chicks.

They can be a strong choice if you want:

A 15 to 22 week old female chicken
A bird closer to laying age
A Marek’s vaccinated pullet
A bird fed non-GMO feed from day one
A pullet raised with human interaction
A less flighty backyard flock addition
A dependable brown egg layer
A calm dual-purpose chicken

Started pullets still need a safe transition period when they arrive. Provide clean water, proper feed, secure housing, predator protection, and time to settle into the flock.

Breed Overview and Origin

Black Australorp chickens originated in Australia and were developed for egg production while also offering good meat value. The breed was recognized by the American Standard of Perfection as a distinct pure breed of poultry in 1929.

This breed is known for shiny, rich black feathering, calm temperament, and excellent brown egg production. Cackle Hatchery® describes Black Australorps as calm, shiny black chickens that are excellent brown egg layers and good winter laying hens.

Cackle Hatchery® has been developing its pure Black Australorp bloodline or strain since 1936.

Appearance and Characteristics

Black Australorps have glossy black plumage with a rich green sheen in the sunlight. Their full body type, clean outline, and deep feather color make them attractive birds for backyard flocks and homesteads.

They are dual-purpose chickens, meaning they are useful for both eggs and meat value. However, most customers choose them for egg production, calm personality, and dependable backyard performance.

Because of their dark feathering, customers should provide shady areas during hot weather. Shade, cool water, good ventilation, and protection from extreme heat help prevent overheating during summer.

Egg Production and Winter Laying Value

Black Australorps are excellent brown egg layers and are especially appreciated as good winter laying hens. This makes them a practical choice for customers who want a productive flock through more than one season.

Since these started pullets are already 15 to 22 weeks old, they may begin laying sooner after arrival than day-old chicks, depending on their age, daylight, season, nutrition, and individual development.

Customers comparing productive brown egg layers can browse Cackle’s Brown Egg Layer Chickens and Egg Laying Chickens categories.

Temperament and Backyard Value

Black Australorps are often loved for their calm, easygoing nature. They are a good fit for backyard flocks, family poultry projects, and customers who want a useful brown egg layer with a gentle disposition.

These started pullets have had human interaction, which helps make them less flighty. They have also been raised in large areas with other birds, making them a practical flock addition when introduced properly.

Cackle’s Black Australorp heritage spotlight notes that this breed is an excellent choice for first-time chicken keepers, especially children, and is popular for 4-H and FFA projects.

Black Australorp Started Pullet vs Day-Old Chicks

Choose a started pullet if you want an older female bird that is closer to laying age and already past the brooder stage.

Choose day-old Black Australorp chicks if you want a lower starting price, more order flexibility, or the experience of raising chicks from the beginning.

Started pullets are especially helpful for customers who want eggs sooner and do not want to manage heat lamps, brooders, and early chick care.

Black Australorp vs Buff Orpington

Black Australorps and Buff Orpington chickens are both calm, dual-purpose brown egg layers, but they have different strengths.

Choose Black Australorp if you want a shiny black bird known for winter laying, calm temperament, and strong production value. Choose Buff Orpington if you want a large golden-buff bird with a quiet disposition, strong broodiness, and traditional dual-purpose body type.

Both can be excellent backyard chickens. The best choice depends on whether the customer prefers Australorp productivity and glossy black color or Orpington size, broodiness, and buff plumage.

Black Australorp vs Black Jersey Giant

Some customers compare Black Australorps with Black Jersey Giants because both are large black chickens.

Choose Black Australorp if you want a productive brown egg layer with a strong reputation for laying and backyard use. Choose Black Jersey Giant if you want a much larger heritage breed with more emphasis on size and meat value.

Cackle Hatchery® does not offer reshipments for these birds. Only a refund of the bird cost is offered under the started pullet policy.

Customers should review Cackle Hatchery’s Chicken Guarantees and Policies page before ordering started pullets. Because these are live juvenile birds, customers should be ready to receive them promptly and move them into safe, prepared housing.
