White Leghorn Started Pullet

Product Overview

The White Leghorn Started Pullet is a 15 to 22 week old female chicken that is close to laying age and ready to become a productive addition to your backyard flock. This is a strong choice for customers who want dependable white egg layers without raising day-old chicks.

Cackle Hatchery® offers White Leghorn Started Pullets as older female birds. Each pullet is priced at $46.00, with a maximum of 2 per order only.

Shipping and handling charges are:

1 bird: $231.00
2 birds: $276.00

These started pullets are vaccinated for Marek’s disease at no additional charge. They are also fed non-GMO feed from day one, raised with human interaction to help reduce flightiness, and grown in large areas with other birds.

Why Choose Started Pullets?

Started pullets are ideal for customers who want female chickens that are already past the baby chick stage. Since these birds are 15 to 22 weeks old, they are much closer to laying age than day-old chicks.

They can be a strong choice if you want:

A 15 to 22 week old female chicken
A bird closer to laying age
A Marek’s vaccinated pullet
A bird fed non-GMO feed from day one
A pullet raised with human interaction
A less flighty flock addition than many Leghorns raised with little handling
A white egg layer for the backyard
A productive breed with strong feed-to-egg efficiency

Started pullets still need a safe transition period when they arrive. Provide clean water, proper layer feed or grower feed depending on age, secure housing, predator protection, and time to settle into the flock.

Breed Overview and Origin

White Leghorn chickens are famous for excellent white egg production, active foraging ability, quick maturity, and strong feed efficiency. The breed was admitted to the American Standard of Perfection in 1874 and has roots in Italy, Denmark, and England.

Leghorns are a light Mediterranean-type breed, which means they are active, athletic, and efficient rather than heavy meat birds. The White Leghorn is especially well known for laying large to extra-large white eggs and for converting feed into eggs very efficiently.

Customers who want to compare day-old chicks can review Cackle Hatchery’s White Leghorn chicks listing.

Appearance and Characteristics

White Leghorns are clean, bright white birds with a light body type, active movement, and an alert personality. They are athletic, hardy, and quick to mature.

This breed is not considered a strong meat producer because of its lighter body. Instead, it is best known for egg production, free-range ability, and efficient feed use.

Leghorns are naturally active and can be nervous or flighty. These started pullets have had human interaction, which can help make them less flighty than birds raised with little contact. Even so, customers should expect a lively, alert breed rather than a quiet, cuddly chicken.

Egg Production and Feed Efficiency

White Leghorns are among the best chicken breeds for white egg production. Hens average about 280 white eggs per year, and some may reach 300 to 320 eggs per year under strong management.

They typically lay large to extra-large white eggs. Because they rarely go broody, they are well suited for more continuous egg laying.

White Leghorns also have a good feed-to-egg conversion ratio. They need around 125 grams of feed per day, making them an efficient choice for customers who want strong egg output without feeding a heavy-bodied dual-purpose breed.

Customers comparing egg-laying breeds can also browse Cackle’s White Egg Layer Chickens and Egg Laying Chickens categories.

Free-Range and Organic Egg Potential

White Leghorns are active and efficient foragers. This makes them a good choice for free-range chicken farming or customers interested in organic-style free-range white eggs.

Because they are light, athletic, and alert, they can often move quickly and avoid some predator pressure better than heavier, slower breeds. However, the white color can make them more visible to predators, so customers still need secure housing, covered areas, and good flock protection.

For customers who want a productive free-range laying bird, the White Leghorn is one of the most efficient choices available.

Temperament and Handling

White Leghorns are active, alert, and independent. They typically avoid human contact more than heavy, docile breeds such as Buff Orpingtons or Cochins. Many Leghorns tend to be nervous or flighty, especially when not handled.

These started pullets have had human interaction, which helps reduce flightiness. Still, customers should understand the breed’s natural personality. White Leghorns are best for customers who want eggs, efficiency, and activity rather than a lap-chicken temperament.

A calm coop routine, regular feeding schedule, and gentle handling can help them adjust after arrival.

Broodiness and Laying Consistency

White Leghorns rarely exhibit broodiness. That means hens are less likely to stop laying in order to sit on eggs.

This makes them a strong option for customers who want steady egg production. However, it also means they are not the best choice for customers who want hens to hatch and raise chicks naturally.

Customers who want broody hens may prefer breeds such as Orpingtons, Cochins, or Silkies. Customers who want efficient white egg production should strongly consider White Leghorns.

White Leghorn Started Pullet vs Day-Old Chicks

Choose a started pullet if you want an older female bird that is closer to laying age and already past the brooder stage.

Choose day-old White Leghorn chicks if you want a lower starting price, more order flexibility, or the experience of raising chicks from the beginning.

Started pullets are especially useful for customers who want eggs sooner and do not want to manage heat lamps, brooders, and early chick care.

White Leghorn vs Brown Egg Layers

White Leghorns are best for customers who want white eggs and high efficiency. Brown egg layers, such as Barred Rocks, Rhode Island Reds, or Buff Orpingtons, are often heavier and may be calmer, but they usually do not match the White Leghorn’s feed-to-egg efficiency.

Choose White Leghorns if your main goal is white egg production, free-range activity, and a lighter bird with quick maturity. Choose brown egg layers if you prefer a heavier chicken, calmer temperament, or brown egg color.

Customers still comparing breeds can use Cackle’s Chicken Breed Selector or Chicken Breeds List Comparison Chart to narrow down the best fit.

Started Pullet Guarantee and Refund Note

Customers should review Cackle Hatchery’s Chicken Guarantees and Policies page before ordering started pullets.

Because started pullets are live juvenile birds, customers should be ready to receive them promptly and move them into safe, prepared housing. Provide water immediately, keep the environment calm, and allow time for the birds to adjust after shipping.
