Important Availability Note
Cackle Hatchery® no longer offers French White Marans chickens. After maintaining and breeding a flock for several years, Cackle Hatchery® discontinued the breed because the egg shell color did not meet the dark Marans standard customers expect.
Customers who like this breed may want to review Cackle Hatchery’s other French Marans varieties, dark brown egg layers, or French Marans surplus options.
Breed Overview and Origin
The French White Marans Chicken is a rare Marans variety known for pure white plumage, gentle temperament, French breed history, and dark egg heritage. This variety stands out because it combines the classic Marans body type with a clean white appearance.
White Marans originated in France during the 1960s as a commercial meat bird. The Marans Club describes White Marans as a French commercial meat-bird development from the 1960s and notes that gourmet chefs still value them.
Cackle Hatchery® once maintained a French White Marans flock. However, after several years of breeding, Cackle could not improve the egg shell color enough to meet customer expectations for a Marans. Because Marans customers often expect rich dark brown eggs, Cackle discontinued the breed rather than offer birds with disappointing shell color.
Appearance and Characteristics
French White Marans have impressively pure white plumage. Their clean color gives them a bright, elegant look, while their Marans background adds useful size and dual-purpose value.
Expected traits include:
- Pure white plumage
- French Marans background
- Gentle temperament
- Friendly personality
- Meat-bird history
- Dual-purpose potential
- Marans body type
- Dark egg breed heritage
- Discontinued Cackle Hatchery® line
- Better suited as historical/product information than a current order option
The Marans Club describes White Marans males as snowy white throughout the plumage, with pinkish-white legs and a creamy white beak.
Temperament and Backyard Appeal
The French White Marans is known as one of the friendliest and gentlest Marans varieties. This calm temperament made the breed appealing for backyard flocks, families, and customers who wanted a rare Marans with a softer personality.
This variety could appeal to customers who value:
- Gentle chickens
- Friendly flock behavior
- Rare Marans history
- White plumage
- Dual-purpose body type
- French poultry heritage
- Meat-bird background
However, because Cackle Hatchery® discontinued this variety, customers should choose another currently available Marans option if they want to place an order.
Meat-Bird History and Chef Appeal
The French White Marans originated as a commercial meat bird in France during the 1960s. Although factory-farmed broilers eventually replaced many traditional meat lines, White Marans retained a reputation for flavorful table quality. The Marans Club notes that gourmet chefs still prefer White Marans over many other breeds.
This history makes the French White Marans interesting for customers who enjoy traditional poultry genetics, rare meat-bird development, and French farm-breed history.
Egg Shell Color and Why Cackle Discontinued the Breed
Marans chickens are famous for dark brown eggs. The breed originated in southwest France, and Marans eggs are known for rich brown tones ranging from mahogany to chocolate.
Cackle Hatchery® maintained a French White Marans flock for several years. However, Cackle could not bring the egg shell color up to standard. Because customers buying Marans often expect dark brown eggs, Cackle felt customers would be unhappy with the lighter shell color.
As a result, Cackle Hatchery® discontinued the French White Marans line. This decision protected customer trust and kept Cackle’s Marans offerings aligned with dark egg expectations.
French White Marans vs Other French Marans Varieties
French White Marans offer beautiful white plumage and gentle temperament, but Cackle discontinued them because egg shell color did not meet expectations.
Customers who want Marans chicks from Cackle Hatchery® may prefer currently available or alternative varieties, such as:
- French Black Copper Marans
- French Black Marans
- French Wheaten Marans
- French Cuckoo Marans
- French Black Tailed Red Marans
- French Marans Pullet Surplus
These options keep customers within the Marans family while offering stronger dark egg appeal or current availability.
French White Marans vs French Black Copper Marans
A French White Marans has pure white plumage and a very gentle temperament, but Cackle discontinued the line because egg shell color did not meet expectations.
A French Black Copper Marans chicken has black plumage with copper hackles and remains one of the most popular Marans varieties for rich dark brown eggs.
Choose French White Marans only if you are researching a discontinued Cackle Hatchery® variety.
Choose French Black Copper Marans if you want a currently recognized dark egg Marans variety with strong customer demand.
French White Marans vs French Wheaten Marans
A French White Marans has pure white plumage and gentle temperament but is no longer available from Cackle Hatchery®.
A French Wheaten Marans chicken has wheaten plumage, feathered shanks, and dark brown egg value. Cackle notes that it has developed its French Wheaten Marans bloodline since 2015.
Choose French Wheaten Marans if you want a currently available French Marans option with dark egg appeal.
French White Marans vs French Marans Pullet Surplus
Choose French White Marans only if you want information about this discontinued white variety.
Choose French Marans Pullet Surplus if you want female French Marans chicks and are flexible about the exact variety. Cackle lists French Marans Pullet Surplus as hatchery choice, which may include a single breed or mixed breeds.
This surplus option can help customers join the French Marans family without waiting for one specific rare variety.
French White Marans vs Dark Brown Egg Female Surplus
Choose French White Marans only for breed-history research, since Cackle discontinued the line.
Choose Dark Brown Egg Female Surplus if you mainly want female dark brown egg layers and are flexible about breed or variety.
This option may be a better fit for customers who care more about a dark egg basket than one exact Marans variety.
Is the French White Marans Right for Your Flock?
Because Cackle Hatchery® discontinued French White Marans, customers should not plan an order for this variety from Cackle.
However, the French White Marans may interest customers who want to learn about:
- Rare White Marans history
- Pure white Marans plumage
- Gentle Marans temperament
- French commercial meat-bird development
- Gourmet poultry history
- Marans egg shell color standards
- Cackle Hatchery® discontinued breed decisions
For a current flock option, customers should consider other French Marans varieties, French Marans Pullet Surplus, or Dark Brown Egg Female Surplus.
Care and Housing Notes
Customers who find White Marans from another breeder should manage them like other Marans. They need clean housing, balanced feed, fresh water, and predator protection.
For best results, provide:
- A dry, well-ventilated coop
- Predator-resistant fencing
- Clean bedding
- Fresh water at all times
- Balanced chick starter and age-appropriate layer feed
- Nest boxes for brown eggs
- Enough roosting space for medium-to-large birds
- A spacious run or safe outdoor access
- Shade and airflow during hot weather
- Protection from drafts and damp bedding in cold weather
- Good nutrition to support egg production and shell quality
Before buying White Marans elsewhere, customers should ask the breeder about egg shell color. Since Marans customers often want dark eggs, shell color expectations should be clear before purchase.
Recognition and Availability
The American Poultry Association accepted White Marans into the U.S. Standard in 2014, according to the Marans Club. However, Cackle Hatchery® discontinued its French White Marans line because the flock’s egg shell color did not meet its customer expectations.
Cackle Hatchery’s current French White Marans product page still appears online, but customers should treat the breed as discontinued based on the product note provided. For current order options, customers should check Cackle Hatchery’s Chicken Availability Chart.
