Broad Breasted Bronze Turkey
Breed Overview and Origin
The Broad Breasted Bronze turkey is a large meat-production turkey known for fast growth, heavy breast development, and classic bronze-colored feathering. If you want to raise turkeys for family meat production, holiday meals, or small farm processing, this variety is one of the most practical choices.
The Bronze turkey strain originated in North America and entered the American Standard of Perfection in 1874. However, the modern Broad Breasted Bronze is different from a heritage Standard Bronze. Broad breasted turkeys have been selected for rapid growth, large breast size, and efficient meat yield.
Cackle Hatchery® has developed its Broad Breasted Bronze Turkey strain since 1987 and currently uses bloodlines from Aviagen Turkeys, Inc. Cackle lists this variety as a commercial meat-production turkey sold as baby poults only, with no sexing available.
Appearance and Characteristics
Broad Breasted Bronze turkeys have dark bronze plumage with a metallic sheen, giving them the traditional turkey look many people associate with Thanksgiving. Their broad body and heavy breast make them especially useful for meat production.
These turkeys grow large quickly. Cackle’s breed facts list projected 20-week live weights of 29 pounds for toms and 21 pounds for hens, with no guarantees because individual weight can vary by feed, weather, management, health, and harvest age.
Because of their size, these birds need lower roosting areas. Cackle lists the recommended roost height as 0 to 2 feet, which helps reduce injury risk for heavy birds.
Broad Breasted Bronze vs Heritage Bronze Turkey
Broad Breasted Bronze turkeys and heritage Bronze turkeys may share bronze coloring, but they are raised for different goals.
Choose Broad Breasted Bronze turkeys if you want fast growth, a large breast, efficient feed-to-meat conversion, and a shorter meat-production project. Choose a heritage Bronze turkey if you want a slower-growing bird that can reproduce naturally, live longer, forage better, and fit a heritage breeding program.
Cackle’s guide, Heritage vs. Broad Breasted Turkeys, explains the key differences between heritage and broad breasted turkeys, including growth, breeding, flavor, and cooking. You can also browse Cackle’s Heritage Turkeys category to compare slower-growing turkey varieties.
Meat Production and Processing Use
Broad Breasted Bronze turkeys are excellent for family meat production. They grow quickly, develop a broad breast, and convert feed efficiently into meat.
For small farms and backyard growers, this variety can be a practical choice for holiday turkeys or seasonal meat production. If customers are still deciding between production turkey types, they can compare this variety with the Broad Breasted White Turkey or browse all Broad Breasted Turkey Poults from Cackle Hatchery®.
These birds work best as a planned meat project rather than a long-term breeding flock. Their size, growth rate, and body structure make them different from heritage turkeys that can remain productive for years.
Reproduction and Breeding Notes
Broad Breasted Bronze turkeys generally do not reproduce well naturally because of their large size and broad body shape. At Cackle Hatchery®, the parent stock are artificially inseminated to support fertility and hatchability.
This is one of the biggest differences between broad breasted and heritage turkeys. Broad breasted turkeys have been selected for meat traits, not natural reproduction. For customers comparing the two types, link again to Heritage vs. Broad Breasted Turkeys or the older Cackle article Differences Between Heritage Turkeys and Broad Breasted Turkeys.
Lifespan and Management
Broad Breasted Bronze turkeys usually have a shorter natural lifespan than heritage turkeys because of their large size and fast growth. For the best results, raise them with a meat-production plan in mind.
Provide plenty of clean water, quality turkey feed, dry bedding, good ventilation, predator protection, and enough space for comfortable movement. Because young turkeys can be more delicate than chicks, early brooder management matters. Cackle’s How to Brood Turkey Poults is a helpful resource for customers starting poults.
Turkey poults can also be prone to starve-out if they do not begin eating properly. For early poult care, link to Cackle’s blog Starve-Out in Turkey Poults.
Temperament and Suitability
Broad Breasted Bronze turkeys are generally docile and manageable. Their calm nature makes them a good fit for small farms, homesteads, and backyard growers who want meat turkeys rather than long-term breeding birds.
They do not fly well because of their heavy body. They also need low roosts or no roosts, especially as they gain weight. A safe ground-level shelter or low roosting setup helps protect legs and joints.
Although these turkeys may be calm, they still need room. Crowded conditions can create stress, dirty bedding, and health issues. A clean, dry, well-ventilated setup will help them grow better.
Keeping Turkeys With Chickens
Some customers want to raise turkeys and chickens together. Cackle’s article Keeping Turkeys With Chickens explains the risks and considerations, especially blackhead disease. For a deeper health-focused support link, use Blackhead in Turkeys Is a Serious Disease.
This is especially important for customers raising turkeys on ground where chickens have already lived. Good management, clean conditions, and awareness of disease risks can help customers make better decisions before mixing poultry types.

Breed History and Preservation
Bronze turkeys have a long history in North America. The Bronze variety entered the American Standard of Perfection in 1874, and the classic bronze color became one of the most recognized turkey appearances in the United States.
The modern Broad Breasted Bronze developed as turkey production shifted toward faster growth and heavier meat yield. Unlike heritage Bronze turkeys, broad breasted types focus on production traits such as larger breast size, fast market growth, and feed efficiency.
Because of that selection, the Broad Breasted Bronze is best understood as a commercial production turkey rather than a heritage breeding turkey. Customers interested in slower-growing, naturally reproducing turkeys should browse Cackle’s Heritage Turkeys.
Recognition and Availability
The historic Bronze turkey variety entered the American Standard of Perfection in 1874. However, Cackle’s breed facts list APA: No for the modern Broad Breasted Bronze production type, which helps separate it from heritage or standard Bronze turkeys.
Cackle Hatchery® sells Broad Breasted Bronze Turkey poults as baby poults only, with no sexing available. They are seasonal and typically ship February through July. Before you plan your order, check Cackle Hatchery’s Availability Chart for current hatch and shipping options.
