Rhode Island Red Started Pullet

Product Overview

The Rhode Island Red Started Pullet is a 15 to 22 week old female chicken that is close to laying age and ready to become a productive addition to your backyard flock. This is a great option for customers who want a classic brown egg layer without raising day-old chicks.

Cackle Hatchery® offers Rhode Island Red Started Pullets as older female birds. Each pullet is priced at $46.00, with a maximum of 2 per order only.

Shipping and handling charges are:

1 bird: $231.00
2 birds: $276.00

These started pullets are vaccinated for Marek’s disease at no additional charge. They are never fed GMO feed, starting from day one. They also have human interaction early in life, which helps make them less flighty, and they are raised in large areas with other birds.

Cackle’s grown fowl category confirms that started pullets are 15 to 22 weeks old and vaccinated for Marek’s disease at no additional cost.

Why Choose Started Pullets?

Started pullets are ideal for customers who want female chickens that are already past the baby chick stage. Since these birds are 15 to 22 weeks old, they are much closer to laying age than day-old chicks.

They can be a strong choice if you want:

A 15 to 22 week old female chicken
A bird closer to laying age
A Marek’s vaccinated pullet
A bird never fed GMO feed
A pullet raised with early human interaction
A less flighty backyard flock addition
A classic brown egg layer
A hardy production-type heritage chicken

Started pullets still need a safe transition period when they arrive. Provide clean water, proper feed, secure housing, predator protection, and time to settle into the flock.

Breed Overview and Origin

The Rhode Island Red is a true American heritage chicken breed developed in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. It is also the state bird of Rhode Island and has a long history as one of the most practical brown egg laying breeds for farms and backyard flocks.

The breed was recognized by the American Standard of Perfection as a distinct pure chicken breed in 1904. Early Rhode Island Red flocks often included both single comb and rose comb birds because of Malay blood influence.

Cackle Hatchery® offers only the single comb production type Rhode Island Red. Cackle’s Rhode Island Red breed facts list the breed as American Class, dual-purpose, brown egg laying, APA recognized, and developed from Cackle Hatchery®’s bloodline or strain of pure Rhode Island Reds since 1936.

Appearance and Characteristics

Single Comb Rhode Island Reds are deep red to dark red chickens with strong bodies, yellow skin, and practical farm build. They are known for hardiness, productivity, and classic backyard appearance.

Cackle’s production-type Rhode Island Red bloodline is bred for egg production and flock performance. Exhibition-type Rhode Island Reds are often darker red and bred more for show qualities, but they may not lay as heavily as production-type birds.

Roosters usually weigh about 8.5 pounds, hens about 6.5 pounds, cockerels about 7.5 pounds, and pullets about 5.5 pounds. Cackle’s Rhode Island Red breed facts list the same standard weights and describe the breed as dual purpose for egg laying and meat production.

Egg Production and Backyard Value

The Single Comb Rhode Island Red is one of Cackle Hatchery®’s most popular brown egg laying production breeds. These birds are well known for dependable egg production, hardiness, and practical value in backyard flocks.

Rhode Island Reds lay brown eggs and are often chosen by customers who want a productive flock that can handle a range of conditions. Cackle’s breed facts estimate egg production at 200 to 280 eggs per year, depending on bird, season, feed, daylight, and management.

Because these started pullets are 15 to 22 weeks old, they may begin laying sooner after arrival than day-old chicks, depending on age, daylight, nutrition, season, and individual development.

Customers comparing productive layers can browse Cackle’s Brown Egg Layer Chickens and Egg Laying Chickens categories.

Temperament and Ease of Care

Rhode Island Reds are popular because they are hardy, productive, and practical. They are a long-time favorite for backyard chicken keepers who want reliable brown egg layers.

These started pullets have had human interaction early in life, which helps make them less flighty. They have also been raised in large areas with other birds, making them a good addition to a backyard flock when introduced properly.

As with any new pullet, customers should introduce them gradually, provide enough feeder and waterer space, and monitor flock behavior while the pecking order adjusts.

Production Type vs Exhibition Type

Cackle Hatchery® offers the single comb Rhode Island Red production type for this started pullet product.

Production-type Rhode Island Reds are selected for egg laying, hardiness, and backyard flock performance. Exhibition-type Rhode Island Reds are generally selected more heavily for show traits, such as deeper mahogany color and breed type. Cackle’s Exhibition Type listing describes that strain as a single-comb show strain with deep mahogany plumage and brick-shaped body type.

Choose this started pullet if you want an older female production-type Rhode Island Red for eggs and backyard use. Choose Rhode Island Red Exhibition Type chicks if your main goal is show-type appearance.

Rhode Island Red Started Pullet vs Day-Old Chicks

Choose a started pullet if you want an older female bird that is closer to laying age and already past the brooder stage.

Choose day-old Rhode Island Red chicks if you want a lower starting price, more order flexibility, or the experience of raising chicks from the beginning. Cackle’s Rhode Island Red chick listing describes the breed as one of the most popular brown egg laying chicken breeds.

Started pullets are especially helpful for customers who want eggs sooner and do not want to manage heat lamps, brooders, and early chick care.

Rhode Island Red vs Red Sex Link

Rhode Island Reds and Red Sex Link chickens are both strong brown egg laying options, but they are not the same.

Choose Rhode Island Red if you want a pure heritage breed with a long American history and Cackle Hatchery® production bloodline. Choose Red Sex Link Started Pullets if you want a hybrid layer produced from Rhode Island Red and Delaware bloodlines.

Both can be excellent for backyard eggs. The main difference is that Rhode Island Red is a breed, while Red Sex Link is a hybrid cross.

Rhode Island Red Bantams and Hatching Eggs

Many customers who like Rhode Island Reds also like the miniature bantam version. Cackle Hatchery® offers Rhode Island Red Bantam Chickens for customers who want a smaller single-comb version of the breed. Cackle’s bantam listing describes them as miniature single-comb Rhode Island Reds that are docile, fun, and great foragers.

At limited times of the year, Cackle also offers Rhode Island Red Fertile Hatching Eggs Production Type and Rhode Island Red Exhibition Type Hatching Eggs for customers who want to incubate eggs at home.

Started Pullet Guarantee and Refund Note

Cackle Hatchery® does not offer reshipments for these birds. Only a refund of the bird cost is offered under the started pullet policy.

Customers should review Cackle Hatchery’s Chicken Guarantees and Policies page before ordering started pullets. Because these are live juvenile birds, customers should be ready to receive them promptly and move them into safe, prepared housing.
