Welsummer Chicken
Breed Overview and Origin
The Welsummer chicken is a handsome Dutch breed best known for its large dark reddish-brown eggs, many of which show the beautiful speckling that makes this breed so popular with backyard chicken keepers. If you are looking for Welsummer chickens for sale because you want a colorful egg basket, an active foraging bird, and a breed with old-world charm, the Welsummer is a strong choice to consider.
Welsummer chickens originated near the village of Welsum in eastern Holland in the early 1900s and first arrived in the United States in 1928. Today, they are valued as practical backyard and homestead chickens because they combine good egg production, attractive coloring, and a generally friendly, alert temperament. Cackle Hatchery® lists Welsummers among its dark brown egg layers, and Cackle’s own Welsummer bloodline has been developed from its poultry breeding farm since 1998.
For many customers, the appeal is simple: Welsummer hens are beautiful, useful, and fun to keep. They are not just decorative birds. They are active chickens that like to forage, scratch, explore, and contribute those rich brown eggs that stand out in a mixed egg carton.
Appearance and Characteristics
Welsummer chickens have a classic farm-flock look with an upright body, broad back, full breast, full tail, and single comb. The best-known variety is the red-and-black partridge Welsummer. Roosters are especially colorful, with warm red, black, and greenish-black tones, while hens have a more subtle but very attractive partridge pattern in shades of brown, gold, and black. Cackle’s breed spotlight describes Welsummers as mid-size, upright birds with a broad back, full breast, large full tail, and single comb.
Welsummer hens are often appreciated for their practical beauty. They are not as flashy as some ornamental breeds, but their feather pattern gives them a rich, natural look that blends well in backyard and homestead flocks. Their clean legs and single comb make them straightforward to manage, though in very cold climates, single-comb birds should still have a dry, draft-free coop with good ventilation to help reduce frostbite risk.
One helpful feature of the partridge Welsummer is that the variety is considered autosexing, meaning males and females can often be told apart early by chick down pattern. This is one reason the partridge variety has remained popular among poultry keepers.
Welsummer vs Barnevelder and Marans: How to Choose a Dark Brown Egg Layer
Customers shopping for Welsummer chicks often compare them with Barnevelders and Marans, because all three are known for darker brown eggs. The best choice depends on what you want most from your flock.
Welsummers are a good fit if you want an active, alert, foraging chicken with a classic partridge pattern and dark reddish-brown eggs that are often speckled. They are especially popular with keepers who like a natural-looking bird and want eggs with a distinct speckled appearance.
Barnevelders, another Dutch breed, are also known for brown eggs and attractive feathering. They may appeal to customers who want a heavier-looking, laced-feather breed with a calm backyard presence.
Marans are often chosen by customers seeking very dark brown egg color. If egg color depth is your top priority, Marans are usually part of that conversation, while Welsummers are often loved for the combination of egg color, speckling, foraging ability, and classic partridge appearance.
Cackle Hatchery® groups Welsummers with other dark brown egg layers, including Barnevelders and Marans, making them a natural breed to compare when building a colorful egg basket.
Egg Production and Utility
Welsummer hens are best known for laying large dark brown to reddish-brown eggs, often with darker speckles. Egg color can vary from hen to hen and through the laying season, but Welsummers are one of the breeds many poultry keepers choose when they want eggs that look special in the carton.
Cackle Hatchery® describes Welsummers as Dutch domestic chickens known for laying dark reddish-brown eggs, and its dark brown egg layer category notes that some dark brown egg breeds, including Welsummers, may produce speckled shells.
Welsummers are generally considered a practical egg-laying breed rather than a heavy meat breed or purely ornamental chicken. They can be useful in backyard flocks, small homesteads, and mixed laying flocks where customers want both beauty and egg-basket variety. Actual egg production can vary with age, daylight, feed quality, season, weather, housing, and overall flock management.
Temperament and Suitability
Welsummer chickens are generally active, alert, and friendly. They are good foragers and usually appreciate room to move, scratch, and explore. If your setup includes a secure run, a larger yard, or supervised free-range time, Welsummers can be very enjoyable birds to keep.
They are often a good choice for backyard chicken keepers who want a bird that is useful but not overly delicate. Welsummers are typically more active than very docile heavy breeds, but they are still manageable for many families and small-flock owners. As with any chicken breed, temperament can vary by individual bird, handling, flock setup, and environment.
Welsummers may be a good fit for beginners who are prepared to provide a secure coop, predator protection, clean water, balanced feed, and enough outdoor space for an active breed. They are also a nice choice for poultry keepers who enjoy watching their flock forage and interact with the yard.
Is the Welsummer Chicken Right for Your Flock?
Choose Welsummer chickens if you want:
- A Dutch chicken breed with a rich history
- A dark brown egg layer for a colorful egg basket
- Large reddish-brown eggs, often with speckles
- A beautiful partridge chicken with a classic farm-flock look
- An active bird that enjoys foraging
- A breed that fits backyard and homestead flocks
- A friendly, alert chicken with practical laying value
- A dark brown egg breed to compare with Barnevelders and Marans

A Welsummer may not be the best choice if you want a very quiet, low-activity bird that stays close to the feeder all day. This breed generally does best when it has space to stay busy.
Breed History and Preservation
The Welsummer was developed in the Netherlands near the village of Welsum in the early 1900s. It first arrived in the United States in 1928 and became known for its handsome appearance and dark brown eggs. The original and most popular variety is the red-and-black partridge pattern.
The partridge Welsummer was admitted to the American Standard of Perfection in 1991. That recognition helped secure the breed’s place among standard poultry breeds in the United States.
Cackle Hatchery® has been developing its own bloodline or strain of pure Welsummers since 1998. That Cackle-specific flock history is important because it tells customers these are not generic dark egg layers; they come from a maintained hatchery breeding program with years of selection behind it.
Recognition and Availability
The partridge Welsummer variety entered the American Standard of Perfection in 1991. Cackle Hatchery® offers Welsummer baby chicks as part of its live poultry selection and lists the breed under Dark Brown Egg Layers for Sale. Availability may vary by hatch date, season, egg numbers, and order timing.
