Tolbunt Polish Chicken
Breed Overview and Origin
The Tolbunt Polish Chicken is a rare and beautiful Polish variety known for its extravagant mix of reddish-brown, black, and white plumage, large crest, soft feathers, docile temperament, and ornamental flock appeal. If you want a truly eye-catching crested chicken for a backyard flock, the Tolbunt Polish is one of the most colorful and unusual options available.
The Tolbunt color pattern is often described as approximately 50% reddish-brown background color, 25% black lacing, and 25% white mottling. In simple terms, it is similar to a golden laced pattern with white mottling added. This complex pattern takes many generations of careful breeding to create and maintain.
The word Tolbunt comes from the German word tollbunt. “Toll” can mean fantastic, breathtaking, or extravagant, while “bunt” means colorful or multi-colored. That makes the name a fitting description for this rare Polish color variety.
The Tolbunt Polish plumage pattern originated in former East Germany. A small population first arrived in the United States in the late 1900s, with a few additional imports arriving later. Because numbers remain limited, Tolbunt Polish chickens continue to be one of the harder-to-find Polish varieties. Cackle Hatchery® lists Tolbunt Polish as a rare, visually striking variety and notes that Cackle has been developing Polish chicken bloodlines since 1971.
Appearance and Characteristics
Tolbunt Polish chickens have soft feathers, large crests, and small V-shaped combs. Their bold color pattern combines reddish-brown, black, and white in a highly variable, ornamental look. No two birds may display the exact same pattern, which adds to their appeal in backyard and specialty flocks.
Cackle Hatchery® notes that its Tolbunt Polish bloodline has mostly smooth feathers with a few frizzles. Some birds are bearded, while others are non-bearded. For the 2024 chick season and beyond, Cackle is focused on developing 100% bearded, smooth-feathered Tolbunt Polish, although the project remains a work in progress.
Expected traits include:
- Large crest or topknot
- Small V-shaped comb
- Soft feathering
- Reddish-brown, black, and white Tolbunt pattern
- Mostly smooth feathers, with some frizzles possible
- Some bearded and some non-bearded chicks possible
- Docile temperament
- Strong ornamental appeal
Because this variety is a breeding project, customers should expect some variation in crest, beard, feather type, and pattern.
Important Breeding Project Note
Tolbunt Polish chickens are difficult to breed consistently. The color pattern takes many generations to develop, and it can be challenging to maintain the correct balance of reddish-brown background, black lacing, and white mottling.
Cackle Hatchery® has a limited supply of Polish chickens with rare Tolbunt plumage. For that reason, Cackle offers no choice between smooth or frizzled feathering and no choice between bearded or non-bearded chicks. Cackle also notes that these birds may produce 10% to 20% frizzles.
Customers should understand this before ordering. Tolbunt Polish are best for keepers who appreciate rare color projects, ornamental variety, and visual surprise rather than perfectly uniform chicks.
Temperament and Backyard Suitability
Tolbunt Polish chickens are generally docile, calm, and friendly. They adapt well to confinement and can make wonderful pets, especially for customers who enjoy ornamental chickens with personality.
This variety can work well for:
- Backyard ornamental flocks
- Crested chicken enthusiasts
- Customers who want rare Polish chickens
- Small backyard setups with predator protection
- Families who want docile flock birds
- Poultry keepers who enjoy unusual feather patterns
- Flocks focused on beauty and personality rather than heavy egg production
However, customers should remember that Polish chickens have large crests. Those head feathers can sometimes limit vision, which may make birds more easily startled or vulnerable to predators. For birds not intended for exhibition, trimming the front of the crest can help improve visibility.
Crest Care and Predator Awareness
The large crest is one of the most attractive features of Tolbunt Polish chickens, but it also requires thoughtful management. A full crest can impair vision, especially if feathers fall forward over the eyes. When a bird cannot see well, it may act flighty, startle more easily, or fail to notice predators quickly.
For best results, provide:
- Secure fencing or a covered run
- Predator-resistant nighttime housing
- Clean, dry bedding
- Good ventilation without drafts
- Regular crest checks
- Careful trimming around the eyes when needed for non-show birds
- Dry feeding and watering areas to keep crest feathers cleaner
- Extra caution if free ranging
Crested chicken care sources commonly note that large crests can limit vision and increase predator risk, especially in birds with heavy or frizzled crests.
Egg Production and Use
Polish chickens were historically valued for white-shell egg production, though today they are considered primarily ornamental because of their dramatic crest. Cackle’s Polish breed content notes that Polish chickens are now mainly ornamental, despite originally being intended as white egg layers.
Tolbunt Polish chickens are best chosen for beauty, rarity, personality, and ornamental backyard value. Customers should not choose this variety as their highest-production egg breed. However, hens may still contribute eggs to the flock depending on age, season, feed, daylight, and individual laying ability.
For customers who want more egg-focused chickens, Cackle’s white egg layer and brown egg layer categories may be better comparisons. For customers who want rare beauty, Tolbunt Polish are a much more distinctive choice.
Marek’s Disease and Vaccination Note
Cackle Hatchery® notes that Polish chickens in general are susceptible to Marek’s disease and recommends asking the hatchery to vaccinate chicks before shipping.
Marek’s disease is a highly contagious viral disease that can cause serious symptoms, including paralysis, vision impairment, and tumors. Cackle’s Marek’s article explains that symptoms such as paralysis often appear between 3 and 6 months of age and that Marek’s can spread quickly in an unvaccinated flock.
Cackle Hatchery® currently offers Marek’s vaccination and states in its vaccination policy that customers should do their own research when deciding whether to vaccinate. However, if Marek’s has been present on a farm before, Cackle notes that vaccination before shipping is one way to help reduce risk.
Because Tolbunt Polish are rare and limited, many customers may find vaccination worth considering.
Tolbunt Polish vs Golden Laced Polish
Tolbunt Polish and Golden Laced Polish chickens can look related because Tolbunt is essentially a golden laced pattern with white mottling added.
A Tolbunt Polish has reddish-brown background color, black lacing, and white mottling. The pattern is more complex and harder to maintain.
A Golden Laced Polish chicken has a golden background with black lacing but does not have the same white mottling. Cackle lists Golden Laced Polish among its rare breed and white egg layer offerings.
Choose Tolbunt Polish if you want a rare, multi-colored, mottled Polish variety.
Choose Golden Laced Polish if you prefer a more traditional laced Polish color pattern.
Tolbunt Polish vs Other Polish Varieties
Tolbunt Polish chickens share the classic Polish traits customers enjoy: large crest, ornamental appearance, soft feathers, and docile temperament. The main difference is the rare Tolbunt plumage pattern.
If you prefer silver and black lacing, compare Silver Laced Polish chickens. Cackle lists Silver Laced Polish as a Continental Class breed with white eggs, medium egg size, docile/flighty temperament, and Polish bloodlines developed by Cackle since 1971.
If you prefer full white feathering, review White Polish chickens. Cackle lists White Polish as a bearded crested Polish chicken with white eggs and exhibition appeal.

Is the Tolbunt Polish Chicken Right for Your Flock?
Choose Tolbunt Polish chickens if you want:
- A rare crested Polish variety
- Reddish-brown, black, and white Tolbunt plumage
- A colorful ornamental chicken
- A docile bird that adapts well to confinement
- A pet-quality backyard chicken with personality
- A rare breeding-project variety
- A bird with a large crest and small V-shaped comb
- A flock addition where no two birds look exactly alike
However, consider another breed if you need high egg production, exact feather-type choice, guaranteed beard status, or a low-maintenance free-range bird. In short, Tolbunt Polish chickens are best for customers who want rare beauty, docile temperament, and a showy crested bird with project-line variation.
Care and Housing Tips
Tolbunt Polish chickens need the same dependable care as other standard-size chickens, plus extra attention to crest cleanliness and visibility.
For best results, provide:
- A dry, well-ventilated coop
- Predator-resistant fencing or a covered run
- Clean bedding
- Fresh water at all times
- Balanced chick starter and age-appropriate feed
- Roosting space suited for crested birds
- Nest boxes in a calm, protected area
- Shade and airflow during hot weather
- Protection from drafts and damp bedding in cold weather
- Regular checks of crest, beard, and facial feathers
- Marek’s vaccination consideration before shipment
Because Polish chickens are crested and may be more vulnerable to predators when vision is limited, secure housing is especially important.
Recognition and Availability
