F2 Olive Egger™ Chickens
Breed Overview
The F2 Olive Egger™ Chicken is a specialty colored egg layer developed by Cackle Hatchery® for customers who want an exciting range of unique eggshell colors. This second-generation Olive Egger™ line can produce hens that lay a wide variety of olive shades, along with some eggs that lean more blue, green, or chocolate in tone.
Cackle Hatchery® creates F2 Olive Eggers™ by using F1 Olive Egger™ hens and crossing them back to a mix of males from selected colored egg genetics, including Black Tailed Red Marans, Black Ameraucana, and Cream Legbar. This breeding approach brings together dark brown egg genetics, blue egg genetics, and green/olive egg genetics to create a colorful and unpredictable egg basket.
If you enjoy variety, surprise, and beautiful eggshell color, F2 Olive Eggers™ can be a fun addition to your flock. Each hen may lay her own shade, and that color can range from olive green to blue-green, lighter blue hues, deeper green tones, or chocolate-influenced shades.
What Does F2 Olive Egger™ Mean?
An F2 Olive Egger™ is a second-generation Olive Egger™. In simple terms, this means it comes after the first-generation Olive Egger™ cross.
Cackle Hatchery® produces its F1 Olive Eggers™ by crossing purebred Cream Legbar roosters with purebred Welsummer hens. The F1 generation is designed to produce olive-colored eggs by combining blue egg genetics with dark brown egg genetics.
The F2 Olive Egger™ takes that idea further. Cackle uses F1 Olive Egger™ hens and crosses them back with males from selected colored egg lines. Because this generation includes more genetic variety, customers can expect more eggshell color variation.
That variety is the main appeal. Instead of one predictable shade, F2 Olive Egger™ hens may produce a broader range of colors, including olive, blue-green, blue-tinted, green-tinted, and chocolate-toned eggs.
Egg Color Expectations
F2 Olive Egger™ hens are bred for egg color variety. Since this is a mixed colored egg project, customers should expect a range of egg shades rather than one uniform color.
Possible egg colors may include:
- Olive green
- Dark olive
- Medium olive
- Light olive
- Blue-green
- Green with blue tones
- Blue-hued eggs
- Chocolate-influenced eggs
- Brown or darker brown tones
Because egg color genetics are complex, not every hen will lay the same shade. In fact, that is part of what makes F2 Olive Eggers™ exciting. A flock of these birds can create a more diverse and colorful egg basket than a single pure breed.
Customers who want a guaranteed true-blue layer may prefer Ameraucanas or Cream Legbars. Customers who want deep brown eggs may prefer Marans or Chocolate Egger™ chickens. However, customers who want variety and surprise will appreciate the F2 Olive Egger™.
How Cackle Hatchery® Produces F2 Olive Eggers™
Cackle Hatchery® uses its own F1 Olive Egger™ hens and crosses them back with a mix of males from selected colored egg lines. These sire lines include:
- Black Tailed Red Marans
- Black Ameraucana
- Cream Legbar
Each of these lines brings something valuable to the cross.
Black Tailed Red Marans contribute dark brown egg genetics and help add chocolate tones to the egg color possibilities.
Black Ameraucana contributes blue egg genetics and true Ameraucana influence.
Cream Legbar contributes blue egg genetics, active laying traits, and colored egg heritage.
Together, these genetics help create hens that can lay a wide range of unique egg colors. This makes the F2 Olive Egger™ a strong option for customers who want more variety than a standard Olive Egger™.
F1 Olive Egger™ vs F2 Olive Egger™
Cackle Hatchery® offers both Olive Egger™ chickens and F2 Olive Egger™ chickens. The main difference is the generation and the expected egg color range.
An F1 Olive Egger™ is the first-generation cross. Cackle Hatchery® produces its F1 Olive Eggers™ from Cream Legbar roosters crossed with Welsummer hens. These hens are bred to lay olive-colored eggs.
An F2 Olive Egger™ is a second-generation colored egg project. Cackle uses F1 Olive Egger™ hens and crosses them back with selected males from Black Tailed Red Marans, Black Ameraucana, and Cream Legbar lines. This creates more eggshell color variation.
Choose F1 Olive Egger™ chickens if you want a more focused olive egg layer.
Choose F2 Olive Egger™ chickens if you want a more colorful range of olive, blue-green, blue, and chocolate-toned eggs.
F2 Olive Egger™ vs Easter Egger™
F2 Olive Eggers™ and Easter Eggers™ can both lay colorful eggs, but they are bred with different goals.
An F2 Olive Egger™ is bred specifically from colored egg genetics designed to create olive, blue-green, blue, and chocolate-influenced egg shades.
An Easter Egger™ is a fun colored egg layer that may lay blue, green, cream, pinkish, or brown-toned eggs, depending on the bird.
Choose F2 Olive Egger™ chickens if you want a more targeted olive egg project with Marans, Ameraucana, Cream Legbar, and Olive Egger™ influence.
Choose Easter Egger™ chickens if you want a colorful, friendly backyard layer and are flexible on the final egg shade.
F2 Olive Egger™ vs Ameraucana
F2 Olive Eggers™ and Ameraucanas both use blue egg genetics, but they are different types of birds.
An F2 Olive Egger™ is a hybrid colored egg layer designed for varied eggshell shades. It is not a standardized breed.
An Ameraucana is a true breed with specific traits, including muffs, beard, pea comb, slate legs, tail, and blue egg genetics.
Choose F2 Olive Egger™ chickens if you want a wide range of colorful eggs.
Choose Ameraucanas if you want a true blue egg breed with recognized breed traits.
F2 Olive Egger™ vs Marans
F2 Olive Eggers™ and Marans both connect to dark egg color, but they serve different flock goals.
An F2 Olive Egger™ may lay olive, blue-green, blue, chocolate-toned, or other unique colored eggs depending on the individual hen.
A Marans is a dark brown egg breed known for chocolate-colored eggs.
Choose F2 Olive Egger™ chickens if you want egg color variety.
Choose Marans if you want a more traditional dark brown egg layer.
For customers who want an egg basket with deep brown, olive, blue, and green tones, F2 Olive Eggers™ can pair well with Marans, Ameraucanas, Cream Legbars, Easter Eggers™, and Chocolate Eggers™.
Appearance and Flock Variation
Because F2 Olive Eggers™ come from mixed colored egg genetics, their appearance may vary. Customers should not expect one uniform feather color, body type, or pattern across every chick.
Depending on the genetic mix, birds may show traits influenced by Cream Legbar, Ameraucana, Marans, and Olive Egger™ ancestry. Some may look more like blue egg breeds, while others may show darker egg-layer influence.
This variety is best for customers who enjoy surprise and individuality in the flock. If you want a flock where every bird looks identical, a standardized breed may be a better choice. However, if you enjoy mixed appearance and colorful eggs, F2 Olive Eggers™ can be especially rewarding.
Temperament and Backyard Suitability
F2 Olive Eggers™ can make a fun and useful choice for backyard flocks, homesteads, and colored egg projects. Since they come from several practical laying lines, they are intended for customers who want beautiful eggs and productive flock value.
This variety can work well for:
- Backyard colored egg flocks
- Customers who want olive eggs
- Customers who want blue-green egg variety
- Homesteads with mixed laying flocks
- Egg basket projects
- Families who enjoy surprise egg colors
- Keepers who like hybrid colored egg layers
- Flocks with Ameraucanas, Marans, Cream Legbars, or Easter Eggers™
However, customers should understand that F2 Olive Eggers™ are not a uniform standard breed. Egg color, appearance, and some traits may vary by individual bird.
Important Sexing Note
Cackle Hatchery® lists the sexing guarantee for F2 Olive Eggers™ at 80%.
This is lower than the typical 90% average used for many easier-to-sex breeds. Customers ordering female chicks should keep this in mind, especially if local rules do not allow roosters.
If you need the most accurate sexing possible, another breed may be a better fit. If you are comfortable with the possibility of extra males, F2 Olive Eggers™ can be an exciting colored egg option.
Is the F2 Olive Egger™ Chicken Right for Your Flock?
Choose F2 Olive Egger™ chickens if you want:
- A specialty colored egg layer
- Olive egg potential
- Blue-green egg potential
- Some blue-hued egg possibilities
- Some chocolate-toned egg possibilities
- Cackle Hatchery® F1 Olive Egger™ genetics
- Marans, Ameraucana, and Cream Legbar influence
- A more varied egg basket
- A backyard flock with surprise and personality
However, consider another option if you want a standardized breed, guaranteed one-color eggs, highly uniform appearance, or the highest possible sexing accuracy. In short, F2 Olive Eggers™ are best for customers who want colorful egg variety and enjoy the fun of mixed egg genetics.
Care and Housing Tips
F2 Olive Eggers™ need the same dependable care as other standard-size laying chickens. They do best with clean housing, secure fencing, proper feed, fresh water, and predator protection.
For best results, provide:
- A dry, well-ventilated coop
- Predator-resistant fencing
- Clean bedding
- Fresh water at all times
- Balanced chick starter and age-appropriate feed
- Enough roosting space
- Nest boxes for colored eggs
- Shade and airflow during hot weather
- Protection from drafts and damp bedding in cold weather
- Consistent nutrition to support laying and shell quality
Because egg color is the main reason many customers choose F2 Olive Eggers™, good nutrition matters. A balanced layer feed, access to calcium when hens begin laying, and clean water can help support strong shells and steady production.
Recognition and Availability
F2 Olive Egger™ chickens are a Cackle Hatchery® colored egg project, not a standardized APA-recognized breed. They are bred for eggshell color variety rather than show standards or uniform feather appearance.
Cackle Hatchery® lists F2 Olive Eggers™ in its colored egg layer category and What’s New category. Since hatch dates and shipping windows can change during the season, customers should check Cackle Hatchery’s Chicken Availability Chart before ordering.
