Light Brahma Started Pullet
Product Overview
The Light Brahma Started Pullet is a 15 to 22 week old female chicken that is close to laying age and ready to become a gentle, beautiful addition to your backyard flock. This is a great option for customers who want a large, calm, cold-hardy chicken without raising day-old chicks.
Cackle Hatchery® offers Light Brahma Started Pullets as older female birds. Each pullet is priced at $46.00.
Shipping charges are:
1 bird: $230.00
2 birds: $275.00
These started pullets are vaccinated for Marek’s disease at no additional charge. Cackle’s grown fowl category confirms that all started pullets are 15 to 22 weeks old and have been vaccinated for Marek’s disease at no added cost.
Why Choose Started Pullets?
Started pullets are ideal for customers who want female chickens already past the baby chick stage. Since these birds are 15 to 22 weeks old, they are much closer to laying age than day-old chicks.
They can be a strong choice if you want:
A 15 to 22 week old female chicken
A bird closer to laying age
A Marek’s vaccinated pullet
A gentle backyard flock addition
A cold-hardy feather-legged breed
A large dual-purpose chicken
A brown egg layer
A broody hen with mothering ability
A children-friendly chicken for pets
Started pullets still need a safe transition period when they arrive. Provide clean water, proper feed, secure housing, predator protection, and time to settle into the flock.
Breed Overview and Origin
Light Brahma chickens originated in Asia and were brought to the United States in the mid-1800s. Brahmas became known as large, gentle, cold-hardy chickens with heavy feathering, feathered legs, and a calm disposition.
Cackle Hatchery® offers its production type Light Brahma, not the exhibition type. This distinction is helpful for customers who want a practical backyard bird for eggs, meat value, broodiness, and family-friendly temperament rather than a show-type bird.
Cackle’s Light Brahma chick listing notes that Cackle Hatchery® Poultry Breeding Farm has been developing its pure Light Brahma bloodline or strain since 1979.
Appearance and Characteristics
Light Brahmas are mostly white with black tail feathers and black markings in the neck feathers. Their large size, feathered legs, small pea comb, and heavy plumage make them stand out in a flock.
The breed is known for being exceptionally quiet, gentle, and easy to handle. Because of that calm nature, Light Brahmas are often a good choice for families, children, and customers who want a friendly backyard chicken.
Brahmas are large birds. Roosters may weigh up to 12 pounds, while hens can weigh close to 10 pounds. Their size makes them useful for meat value, while hens can also provide brown eggs for the home flock.
Egg Production and Dual-Purpose Value
Light Brahma hens are good layers of brown eggs and can be useful dual-purpose birds. They are not lightweight production layers like Leghorns, but they offer a strong combination of eggs, meat value, broodiness, temperament, and cold-weather hardiness.
Because these started pullets are already 15 to 22 weeks old, they may begin laying sooner after arrival than day-old chicks, depending on age, season, daylight, feed, stress, and individual development.
Customers comparing brown egg layers can browse Cackle’s Brown Egg Layer Chickens category.
Cold Hardiness and Climate Care
Light Brahmas are very cold tolerant. Their small pea comb, large body, and thick feathering help them handle cold weather better than many large-combed or lightly feathered breeds.
Cackle’s Brahma category page notes that Brahmas are very cold tolerant because of their heavy body and thick feathering. In summer, they can do fine if they have shade and water.
Even though this breed is cold hardy, customers should still provide dry housing, good ventilation, clean bedding, and protection from wet drafts. In hot weather, shade, airflow, and fresh water are important because large, heavily feathered birds can become uncomfortable in extreme heat.
Feathered Leg and Foot Care
Light Brahmas have feathered legs and feet. This is one of their most recognizable features, but it also means customers should pay attention to mud, snow, and wet bedding.
Cackle’s Light Brahma Started Pullet page and Brahma category page both note that feathered legs and feet can collect mud during rainy weather and snow during winter, so customers should keep an eye on their feet and clean them when needed.
Good coop drainage, dry bedding, and clean outdoor areas help keep feathered feet healthier.
Broodiness and Mothering Ability
Light Brahma hens are known as excellent broody mothers. This makes them a good fit for customers who enjoy traditional flock behavior and may want hens that are willing to sit and raise chicks.
Broodiness can be a benefit for customers who want natural chick-raising ability. However, a broody hen may pause laying while sitting, so customers focused only on egg production should keep that in mind.
For many backyard keepers, this mothering instinct is one of the traits that makes Brahmas so enjoyable.
Light Brahma Started Pullet vs Day-Old Chicks
Choose a started pullet if you want an older female bird that is closer to laying age and already past the brooder stage.
Choose day-old Light Brahma chicks if you want a lower starting price, more order flexibility, or the experience of raising chicks from the beginning.
Started pullets are especially helpful for customers who want older female birds and do not want to manage heat lamps, brooders, and early chick care.
Production Type vs Exhibition Type
Cackle Hatchery® offers production type Light Brahma for this started pullet product. Cackle also offers Exhibition Light Brahma chicks for customers who want a show-type version of this variety.
Choose this started pullet if you want a practical older female bird for backyard eggs, temperament, cold hardiness, and flock enjoyment. Choose Exhibition Light Brahma chicks if your main goal is a show-type Light Brahma raised from the chick stage. Cackle’s Exhibition Light Brahma listing describes that option as a large feather-legged show-type breed with white plumage, black hackles, and black tail feathers.
Other Brahma Colors to Compare
Customers who like Light Brahmas may also want to compare Cackle Hatchery®’s other Brahma color options.
Cackle’s Brahma category includes Light, Dark, Buff, Lavender, Isabel, and other Brahma varieties depending on availability. The category page also notes that Brahmas have heavy bodies, thick feathering, and strong cold tolerance.
