Cuckoo Marans Started Pullet

Product Overview

The Cuckoo Marans Started Pullet is a 15 to 22 week old female chicken that is close to laying age and ready to become a unique dark brown egg layer in your backyard flock. This is a great choice for customers who want the famous Marans egg color without raising day-old chicks.

Cackle Hatchery® offers Cuckoo Marans Started Pullets as older female birds. Each pullet is priced at $46.00.

Shipping and handling charges are:

1 bird: $231.00
2 birds: $276.00

These started pullets are vaccinated for Marek’s disease at no additional charge. Cackle’s grown fowl category confirms that all started pullets are 15 to 22 weeks old and are vaccinated for Marek’s disease at no added cost.

Why Choose Started Pullets?

Started pullets are ideal for customers who want female chickens that are already past the baby chick stage. Since these birds are 15 to 22 weeks old, they are much closer to laying age than day-old chicks.

They can be a strong choice if you want:

A 15 to 22 week old female chicken
A bird closer to laying age
A Marek’s vaccinated pullet
A rare dark brown egg layer
A dual-purpose chicken
A production-type Cuckoo Marans
A bird with black-and-white cuckoo feathering
A backyard flock addition with unique egg basket appeal

Started pullets still need a safe transition period when they arrive. Provide clean water, proper feed, secure housing, predator protection, and time to settle into the flock.

Breed Overview and Origin

The Marans is officially recognized by the American Poultry Association in the Continental Class. Cuckoo Marans were developed in France in the town of Marans during the mid-1800s.

This breed is known for dual-purpose value, dark brown eggs, and attractive cuckoo feathering. Cackle Hatchery®’s standard Cuckoo Marans are a production-type bloodline with limited to no feathers on their legs.

Cackle’s Cuckoo Marans chick page describes the variety as a dark brown egg layer and offers day-old Cuckoo Maran chicks for customers who want to raise this breed from the beginning.

Appearance and Characteristics

Cuckoo Marans have a black-and-white feather pattern similar to the Barred Plymouth Rock. This cuckoo pattern gives them a clean, classic look while still offering the special dark egg appeal associated with Marans.

Cackle Hatchery®’s production-type Cuckoo Marans have limited to no leg feathering. This is important because some customers compare them with French feather-legged Marans varieties. Cackle also offers French Cuckoo Marans, which are a rare feather-legged Marans variety with cuckoo plumage and dark brown eggs.

These started pullets are a practical choice for customers who want a dark brown egg layer with a familiar barred-style appearance.

Dark Brown Egg Production

Cuckoo Marans are famous for deep chocolate brown eggs. Some eggs may also have speckled dark pigments in the shell, adding even more interest to the egg basket.

Egg color can vary in darkness as hens move through their laying cycles. The darkest eggs are often seen earlier in a laying cycle, while shell color may lighten with continued production. Vitamin K and calcium may offer limited help in supporting dark shell color, but genetics, laying cycle, bird condition, and overall nutrition all play a role.

Customers who want to compare similar breeds can browse Cackle’s Dark Brown Egg Layers category. Cackle lists Marans and other specialty breeds in this group for customers looking for darker eggs.

Dual-Purpose Value

Cuckoo Marans are dual-purpose birds. That means they are useful for both egg production and meat value.

They are also fast-growing compared with many specialty breeds. This makes them a good fit for customers who want more than just egg color. Their body type, growth, and production value can make them a practical bird for homesteads and backyard flocks.

Customers mainly choose this variety for dark brown eggs, but the dual-purpose background adds extra value for long-term flock planning.

Cuckoo Marans vs French Cuckoo Marans

Cackle Hatchery® offers both standard Cuckoo Marans and French Cuckoo Marans. These are related but not identical listings.

Choose Cuckoo Marans Started Pullets if you want an older female production-type Marans with limited to no feathers on the legs and dark brown egg potential.

Choose French Cuckoo Marans chicks if you want the rare feather-legged type. Cackle’s French Cuckoo Marans listing describes that variety as feather-legged, rare, dual-purpose, and a dark brown egg layer.

Cackle’s blog English Marans or French Marans Chicken? explains that Cackle began breeding Cuckoo Marans in 1999, when English Marans were the prevailing type in the United States, and later used “French Marans” to distinguish feather-legged imports from English-type birds.

Cuckoo Marans vs Barred Rock

Cuckoo Marans and Barred Rock chickens can look similar because both have black-and-white barred or cuckoo-style feathering. However, they are different breeds with different strengths.

Choose Cuckoo Marans if your main goal is dark brown eggs and a rare French-origin dual-purpose bird. Choose Barred Rock if you want a classic American backyard breed known for dependable brown egg production, hardiness, and family-friendly temperament.

Both can be excellent flock birds. The best choice depends on whether you prefer the dark egg specialty of Marans or the classic production reliability of Barred Rocks.

Cuckoo Marans Started Pullet vs Day-Old Chicks

Choose a started pullet if you want an older female bird that is closer to laying age and already past the brooder stage.

Choose day-old Cuckoo Marans chicks if you want a lower starting price, more order flexibility, or the experience of raising chicks from the beginning.

Cackle also offers Cuckoo Marans Fertile Hatching Eggs at seasonal times for customers who want to incubate their own eggs. That listing notes that chicken hatching eggs hatch at 21 days and require careful temperature and humidity management.

Other Marans Varieties to Compare

Customers who like Cuckoo Marans may also want to compare other dark brown egg layers from Cackle Hatchery®.

Options may include French Black Marans, French Black Copper Marans, French Wheaten Marans, and French Golden Salmon Marans. Cackle describes these French Marans listings as dark brown egg layer options, with several being rare or specialty Marans varieties.
