Black Old English Bantam Chicken
Breed Overview and Origin
The Black Old English Bantam chicken is a miniature version of the Standard Old English Game chicken, bred mainly for exhibition, hobby flocks, and small backyard setups. If you want a small, active, eye-catching bantam with classic show-bird style, this black variety is a strong choice.
Old English Game chickens trace back to old European and British game fowl. Today, poultry keepers raise them primarily for exhibition, breed preservation, and ornamental enjoyment rather than their original historical purpose. Cackle Hatchery® describes the related Black Standard Old English as one of the oldest chicken types in existence, with roots tracing back to European and Victorian-era game fowl.
Unlike true bantams, Old English Game Bantams are miniature versions of a standard-size breed. Cackle Hatchery’s True Bantam Chicken Breeds article is a helpful resource for understanding that difference: true bantams have no large-fowl counterpart, while breeds like Old English Game Bantams come from larger standard breeds.
Cackle Hatchery® offers the Black Old English Bantam as baby chicks only, with no sexing available and seasonal shipping from early February through mid-August. The current Cackle listing also places this variety in the Bantam Chickens for Sale category.
Appearance and Characteristics
Black Old English Bantams have a clean, sharp show-bird look. Their black plumage gives them a polished appearance, especially as they mature into solid feather color. The breed also carries the alert posture, compact body, and confident character that make Old English Game Bantams popular in exhibition circles.
Cackle Hatchery® includes an important newbie note for this variety: some white feathers may appear during the first and second stage of feathering. That early white feathering is normal, and by around 6 months of age, the birds should show solid black feathers.
This note matters because new keepers may worry when young Black Old English Bantams do not look fully black right away. In many cases, the bird simply needs time to finish maturing.
Old English Game Bantams come in many color varieties. The Old English Game Bantam Baby Chick Special can include several varieties, including Black, Blue, White, Spangled, Silver Duckwing, Ginger Red, Mille Fleur, Crele, Self Blue, Wheaten, Splash, Black Breasted Red, Brown Red, Barred, Brassy Back, Golden Duckwing, and Red Pyle.
Black Old English Bantam vs Standard Black Old English Game: How to Choose
Black Old English Bantams and Standard Black Old English Game chickens share similar breed roots, but they fit different customers.
Choose Black Old English Bantam if you want a small exhibition bird, a compact backyard pet, or a miniature Old English Game type that uses less space and feed than standard-size birds.
Choose Black Standard Old English Game chickens if you want the larger standard version of the breed. Cackle notes that the Black Standard Old English is recognized by the American Standard of Perfection in 1938 and listed on The Livestock Conservancy Watch status as a sustainable heritage breed.
For customers who want variety, the Old English Game Bantam Baby Chick Special can be a good option. It gives customers a hatchery-choice assortment of Old English Game Bantam varieties based on what hatches.
Egg Production and Utility
Black Old English Bantams serve mainly as ornamental, pet, and exhibition chickens. Customers should choose them for small size, show potential, personality, and classic bantam type rather than heavy egg production.
Hens may lay small white or tinted eggs, but this breed does not rank as a production layer. The Old English Game breed page from Wikipedia notes that Old English Game hens may lay about 40 small tinted eggs per year, although individual production can vary.
Because these are bantams, they also do not serve as meat birds. Their value comes from exhibition appeal, heritage breed character, small-flock enjoyment, and the pleasure of keeping a lively miniature chicken.
Temperament and Suitability
Black Old English Bantams are active, alert, and full of personality. With regular gentle handling, many become tame enough for children to enjoy under adult supervision. Their small size also makes them easier to manage in small backyards and bantam-friendly coops.
Even so, they are still game-type bantams, so they may act more spirited than very docile breeds. Roosters can become territorial, especially during breeding season, and individual temperament can vary by bird, handling, and flock setup.
This variety can work well for:
- Poultry exhibitors
- Bantam hobby flocks
- 4-H and youth poultry projects with guidance
- Small backyard coops
- Families who want a small pet chicken
- Keepers who enjoy active, alert bantams
- Customers who want a showy black bantam variety
A different breed may suit you better if you mainly want heavy egg production, meat, or a very calm lap-style chicken. Black Old English Bantams shine when customers want a small, attractive, show-type bird with plenty of character.
Is the Black Old English Bantam Chicken Right for Your Flock?
Choose Black Old English Bantam chickens if you want:
- A miniature Old English Game chicken
- A small show bantam with black plumage
- A bird that can become tame with handling
- A compact chicken for a small backyard setup
- A bantam for exhibition, 4-H, or hobby flocks
- A variety that matures into solid black feathering
- A breed with classic Old English Game character
- A small bird that uses less feed and space than standard chickens
- A related option to the larger Black Standard Old English Game
Consider another breed if you want steady egg production, a meat bird, or a very low-energy flock companion. Black Old English Bantams are best for customers who enjoy bantams, show birds, and lively small chickens.
Newbie Note: Early White Feathers Are Normal
Young Black Old English Bantams may show some white feathers during their first and second stage feathering. This is normal for this variety and should not automatically worry new keepers.
As the birds mature, the white juvenile feathering gives way to solid black plumage. By around 6 months of age, Black Old English Bantams should show their mature black feather color.
This note is helpful for first-time customers because young chicks and juveniles do not always look like finished adult show birds right away. Patience matters with feather development.
Breed History and Preservation
Old English Game chickens have a long history connected to old British and European game fowl. After cockfighting became illegal in Britain in 1849, breeders continued keeping Old English Game birds primarily for exhibition.
The bantam version became popular with poultry fanciers because it preserves the look and character of the larger Old English Game in a much smaller bird. Over time, breeders developed many recognized color varieties, making Old English Game Bantams one of the most varied and widely shown bantam groups.
Cackle Hatchery® continues to offer both standard and bantam Old English Game options. The related Standard Old English Game for Sale category notes that these birds compete in the “All Other Standard Breeds — Games” class.
For customers who enjoy heritage-style exhibition poultry, Black Old English Bantams offer more than small size. They connect a backyard or show flock to a long tradition of game fowl type, bantam exhibition, and careful color breeding.
Recognition and Availability
Old English Game Bantams have a long-standing place in American poultry exhibition, with many recognized color varieties. The original Cackle Hatchery® description notes that these chickens have been admitted into the American Standard of Perfection several times, reflecting the many recognized varieties within the breed group.
Cackle Hatchery® lists Black Old English Game Bantams as baby chicks only, with no sexing available and seasonal shipping from early February through mid-August.
Availability can vary by hatch date, season, egg numbers, and order timing. The Bantam Chickens for Sale category notes that bantams are popular for pets, showing, broody hens, and small backyards, and that many bantam breeds hatch and ship from February through August.
Customers should check the Chicken Availability Chart before ordering because bantam availability can change throughout the season.
