Cackle Hatchery® reluctantly discontinued the Self Blue D’Uccles Bantam in 2018, after 30 years of breeding this beautiful true bantam. Admitted into the American Poultry Association Standard of Perfection in 1996, it was popular for many years.
Unfortunately, the hatchability of Self Blue D’Uccles Bantam eggs become too low for the viability of a continued breeding program. As time went by, the hens’ eggs gradually got too long, which likely contributed to their low hatchability. Further, our breeder flock developed too much wattle as the birds gradually lost their characteristic beard and muffs.
Unable to find any other Self Blue D’Uccles breeders in the United States, we could neither infuse new bloodlines into our breeder flock nor replace them. We would like to hear from anyone who might lead us to other breeders of Self Blues so we can consider starting again.
Meanwhile, we continue to offer the dainty Porcelain D’Uccles Bantam and the beautiful Mille Fleur D’Uccles Bantam.
