Kosher King
Kosher King
Breed Overview
The Kosher King Chicken is a heritage-style broiler developed from breeds such as the Barred Rock and Sussex. These active meat birds are excellent foragers and make a strong choice for customers who want a slower-growing, pasture-friendly alternative to commercial white broilers.
Kosher Kings are closely related to Freedom Rangers and exhibit a similar growth rate, body conformation, and personality. Cackle Hatchery® lists Kosher Kings as a cousin to the Freedom Ranger and notes that they share the same growth rate, body conformation, and personality.
Because they forage well, Kosher Kings can work especially well for growers who want active meat birds suited to pasture, range, and more natural broiler management.
Appearance and Characteristics
Kosher Kings show some color variation. Around 80% of the birds are barred, while about 20% show a mix of silver and red. Freedom Ranger Hatchery also describes Kosher Kings as heritage-breed crosses with about 80% black-and-white barred birds and 20% silver-and-red birds. (freedomrangerhatchery.com)
Expected traits include:
- Barred plumage in most birds
- Silver and red color variation in some birds
- Heritage breed background
- Barred Rock and Sussex influence
- Strong foraging ability
- Meat-bird purpose
- Similar growth rate to Freedom Rangers
- Similar body conformation to Freedom Rangers
- Similar personality to Freedom Rangers
- Active pasture-friendly behavior
- Male broilers available at straight-run pricing when supply allows
Because Kosher Kings are production broilers, customers should choose them for meat value, foraging ability, and grow-out performance rather than exhibition use.
Heritage Breed Background
Kosher Kings originate from heritage breeds such as Barred Rock and Sussex. This background helps create a hardy, active broiler with good outdoor instincts.
The Barred Rock influence contributes barred coloring, durability, and classic American utility-type character. Meanwhile, the Sussex influence adds meat value, foraging ability, and practical flock traits. Together, these genetics create a broiler that can perform well outside while still producing a useful carcass.
This heritage-style background makes Kosher Kings a strong choice for customers who want a more active meat bird than a standard commercial broiler.
Growth, Body Conformation, and Meat Value
Kosher Kings grow at a similar rate to Freedom Rangers. Cackle Hatchery® and Freedom Ranger Hatchery both describe the Kosher King as a cousin to the Freedom Ranger with similar growth rate, body conformation, and personality.
These birds do not serve the same role as the fastest-growing Cornish Cross broiler. Instead, they fit customers who want a more active, pasture-capable broiler with strong foraging behavior and good meat value.
Kosher Kings can appeal to:
- Pasture poultry growers
- Free-range broiler customers
- Homesteads
- Small farms
- Ethnic food market growers
- Customers who prefer active meat birds
- Growers wanting a Freedom Ranger-style broiler
- Customers who want males for larger grow-out size
Most growers prefer males because they grow faster and get larger than females.
Excellent Foraging Ability
Cackle Hatchery® notes that its Kosher Kings are excellent foragers. This trait matters for customers who raise birds on pasture, in mobile pens, or in range-style systems.
Foraging helps birds express natural behavior such as scratching, pecking, and grazing. However, customers should still provide balanced broiler feed, clean water, and predator protection. Foraging supports the diet, but it should not replace complete nutrition during grow-out.
For best results, raise Kosher Kings with:
- Fresh pasture or range access
- Predator-resistant housing
- Clean water at all times
- Balanced broiler feed
- Shade and airflow in hot weather
- Dry shelter during rain
- Enough feeder space for fast-growing birds
Male Broiler Availability and Ethnic Market Background
On most weeks, Cackle Hatchery® sells broiler chicks to growers who raise birds for ethnic food markets in New York City. These growers prepare a dish called a Confucius Dish, which requires female birds. Because of this demand, Cackle sells those growers a higher percentage of females than males.
As a result, Cackle often has a certain number of male Kosher King broilers available to sell at the same price as straight run. This can benefit customers who prefer males for meat production, since males typically grow faster and larger than females.
This note helps customers understand why male broilers may be available and why many growers prefer them for grow-out performance.
Shipping Note
This order ships from a different location through one of Cackle Hatchery’s participating hatchery partners.
Customers should keep this in mind when planning delivery, brooder setup, and orders with other poultry. Partner-shipped birds may ship separately from other Cackle Hatchery® items.
Cancellation Policy
All cancellations must be final 3 weeks prior to the ship date.
Because Kosher King orders involve broiler production schedules and partner hatchery coordination, customers should confirm order details, ship dates, and brooder readiness as early as possible.
Kosher King vs Freedom Ranger
Kosher Kings and Freedom Rangers are closely related in purpose and performance.
A Kosher King comes from heritage breeds such as Barred Rock and Sussex. It is an excellent forager, and most birds are barred, with some silver and red color variation.
A Freedom Ranger is another pasture-friendly broiler option. Cackle describes Freedom Rangers as ideal for free-range environments and notes that they grow to 5 to 6 pounds in 9 to 12 weeks.
Choose Kosher Kings if you want a heritage-style barred broiler with strong foraging ability and male broiler availability when supply allows.
Choose Freedom Rangers if you want Cackle Hatchery’s widely known free-range broiler option.
Kosher King vs Cornish Cross
Kosher Kings and Cornish Cross chickens serve different meat-bird goals.
A Kosher King is an active, foraging broiler with heritage breed influence and a growth pattern similar to Freedom Rangers.
A Cornish Cross is a fast-growing commercial-style broiler bred for rapid weight gain and efficient feed conversion.
Choose Kosher Kings if you want an active meat bird for pasture, range, or more natural grow-out systems.
Choose Cornish Cross if you want the fastest-growing meat bird and plan to manage a more intensive broiler system.
Kosher King vs Delaware X Hampshire Cross
Kosher Kings and Delaware X Hampshire Cross chickens both appeal to customers who want more traditional broiler options.
A Kosher King is a heritage-style foraging broiler connected to Barred Rock and Sussex genetics.
A Delaware X Hampshire Cross is a historic dual-purpose cross made from a Delaware rooster over a New Hampshire hen.
Choose Kosher Kings if you want a Freedom Ranger-style broiler with excellent foraging ability.
Choose Delaware X Hampshire Cross if you want a dual-purpose bird with Indian River broiler history.
Is the Kosher King Chicken Right for Your Flock?
Choose Kosher King chickens if you want:
- A heritage-style broiler
- Barred Rock and Sussex background
- A cousin to the Freedom Ranger
- Similar growth rate to Freedom Rangers
- Similar body conformation to Freedom Rangers
- Excellent foraging ability
- Active pasture-friendly meat birds
- Mostly barred plumage
- Some silver and red color variation
- Male broilers that may grow faster and larger than females
- A broiler option for small farms, homesteads, or ethnic market growers
However, consider another broiler if you want the fastest possible grow-out, exact color uniformity, or a bird that ships from the same location as all other Cackle Hatchery® orders. In short, Kosher Kings are best for customers who want active, hardy, heritage-style broilers with strong foraging ability.
Care and Housing Tips
Kosher Kings need strong brooder management, balanced nutrition, and enough room to grow. Since they are meat birds, early care plays a major role in final performance.
For best results, provide:
- A warm brooder before chicks arrive
- Clean, dry bedding
- Fresh water at all times
- Balanced broiler feed
- Enough feeder and waterer space
- Good ventilation without drafts
- Predator-resistant housing
- Outdoor or pasture access when age and weather allow
- Shade during hot weather
- Dry shelter during wet weather
- Space for active movement and foraging
- A clear grow-out plan before chicks ship
Because these birds forage well, they can benefit from pasture rotation or mobile housing. Even so, they still need complete feed and careful protection from predators.
Recognition and Availability
Kosher Kings are production broilers rather than exhibition chickens. Cackle Hatchery® lists Kosher Kings in its live poultry and meat/broiler offerings.
Because this order ships from a participating hatchery partner, customers should review ship dates, cancellation timing, and brooder preparation carefully. All cancellations must be final 3 weeks prior to the ship date.
