Jumbo Pekin Duck
The Jumbo Pekin Duck is Cackle Hatchery®’s largest strain of Pekin duck. This duck was developed for customers who want a large, fast-growing Pekin with strong meat value and good size.
Commercial Pekin ducks are produced by crossing a male from a large, meaty Pekin strain with a female Pekin from a medium-sized, highly fertile, good egg-producing strain. As a result, customers get a good number of ducklings from the female line, while the male line contributes size and meat qualities.
Jumbo Pekins make an excellent choice for meat pens and practical farm use. However, they do not have the special conformation needed for show Pekins.
This order ships from a different location through one of Cackle Hatchery®’s participating hatchery partners.
Cackle Hatchery® cannot ship these ducks to Hawaii or Puerto Rico.
Breed Overview and Development
Pekin ducks are one of the most popular domestic duck types in the United States. They are widely known for white plumage, rapid growth, useful body size, and meat production value.
The Jumbo Pekin is a larger production strain. Cackle Hatchery® uses this type for customers who want heavier Pekin ducklings that can grow into good-sized birds.
Rather than focusing on exhibition conformation, this strain focuses more on practical size, growth, and meat value. That makes the Jumbo Pekin a strong option for customers raising ducks for the freezer, farm production, or meat pen projects.
How Jumbo Pekins Are Produced
Jumbo Pekins come from a purposeful commercial cross. The male line comes from a large, meaty Pekin strain. Meanwhile, the female line comes from a medium-sized Pekin strain selected for fertility and good egg production.
This pairing creates a practical balance. The female line helps produce more ducklings, while the male line helps those ducklings grow into larger birds.
Because of that cross, Jumbo Pekins offer the size customers want without relying only on one trait. Instead, the breeding program combines fertility, egg production, growth, and meat value.
Appearance and Characteristics
Jumbo Pekins have the classic Pekin look, with white feathers, orange bills, and a broad domestic duck body. Since this is Cackle Hatchery®’s largest Pekin strain, customers should expect a bigger, meatier bird than standard utility-type ducks.
Their white feathers give them the familiar farm-duck appearance many people associate with Pekins. Their body size and growth potential make them especially useful for customers who want a larger duck.
Although they look like Pekins, customers should remember that this strain was not developed for show Pekin conformation. Instead, Cackle Hatchery® offers Jumbo Pekins for meat value and meat pen use.
Meat Production and Farm Value
Jumbo Pekins are best known for size and meat value. They grow into good-sized birds and can work well for customers who want a practical meat duck.
They are a strong choice for:
Meat production
Farm flocks
Homestead freezer projects
4-H or youth meat pen projects
Customers wanting larger Pekin ducks
Customers focused on body size and growth
Customers who want ducks mainly for egg production may prefer breeds such as Khaki Campbell Ducks, Golden 300 Hybrid Layer Ducks, or White Layer Ducks.
Exhibition Meat Pens vs Show Pekins
Jumbo Pekins can be excellent for exhibition meat pens. Their size and meaty build make them useful for that purpose.
However, Jumbo Pekins do not have the special conformation needed for show Pekins. Customers who want birds for breed-standard exhibition should understand this difference before ordering.
Choose Jumbo Pekins for meat pens, production, and larger body size. Choose show-type Pekins only if your main goal is exhibition conformation.
Temperament and Flock Management
Pekin ducks are generally manageable domestic ducks. Jumbo Pekins can work well for farms, homesteads, and backyard flocks when customers provide proper care.
Because Jumbo Pekins grow large, customers should plan for enough space, sturdy bedding, clean water, and safe housing. Heavy ducks can create wet bedding quickly, so good brooder and pen management matters.
A good setup should include:
Clean drinking water
Balanced duck or waterfowl feed
Safe nighttime shelter
Dry bedding or resting areas
Predator protection
Room for growth
Shade in hot weather
Protection from wind and storms
As they mature, Jumbo Pekins need enough room to move comfortably and maintain good condition.
Jumbo Pekin Duck vs Standard Pekin Duck
Jumbo Pekins and Pekin Ducks share the same general breed background, but they serve slightly different goals.
Choose Jumbo Pekins if you want Cackle Hatchery®’s largest Pekin strain, stronger meat value, and excellent meat pen potential.
Choose standard Pekin Ducks if you want a classic white farm duck with broad utility, backyard appeal, and traditional Pekin characteristics.
Both options can work well for customers who like white domestic ducks. However, Jumbo Pekins better suit customers who want extra size.
Jumbo Pekin Duck vs Buff Duck
Jumbo Pekins and Buff Ducks can both serve customers who want domestic ducks with meat value.
Choose Jumbo Pekins if you want a larger white duck strain focused strongly on size and meat production.
Choose Buff Ducks if you want a dual-purpose duck with warm buff-colored plumage, useful egg production, and roasting value.
Jumbo Pekins lean more toward meat and meat pen use. Buff Ducks offer a more balanced egg-and-meat purpose.
Jumbo Pekin Duck vs Silver Appleyard Duck
Jumbo Pekins and Silver Appleyard Ducks both appeal to customers who want ducks with meat value.
Choose Jumbo Pekins if you want a large white production duck with strong meat pen potential.
Choose Silver Appleyards if you want a dual-purpose breed with rapid growth, good laying ability, and more colorful plumage.
Both breeds can work for farm or homestead customers. The best choice depends on whether you want maximum Pekin size or a more colorful dual-purpose duck.
Shipping Note

Because this breed ships through a partner hatchery, customers should review ordering details carefully before placing an order. Availability, hatch dates, and shipping schedules may vary by season.
Cackle Hatchery® cannot ship these ducks to Hawaii or Puerto Rico.
Duckling Care After Arrival
Before Jumbo Pekin ducklings arrive, customers should prepare a clean, warm, and safe brooder.
A proper duckling setup should include:
A secure brooder
A proper heat source
Clean drinking water
Duckling feed or appropriate waterfowl starter
Dry bedding
Enough room to move away from heat
Protection from drafts, pets, and predators
Because Jumbo Pekins grow quickly, they will need more space as they develop. Customers should keep bedding dry, monitor leg and foot health, and make sure feed and water are always easy to reach.
Ducklings should always have access to water when eating. However, the water setup should reduce splashing so the brooder stays as dry as possible.
