Crele Old English Game Bantam Chicken
Breed Overview and Origin
The Crele Old English Game Bantam chicken is a colorful miniature version of the Standard Old English Game chicken. If the standard-size bird is too large for your setup, this bantam gives you the same proud look and lively personality in a smaller, easier-to-keep package.
Old English Game chickens trace back to ancient game-type fowl in Great Britain. Oklahoma State University notes that these birds descended from ancient fighting fowl brought to Britain by the Romans, and after cockfighting was banned in 1849, many breeders redirected their interest toward poultry shows. That shift helped shape Old English Game chickens into the exhibition birds people know today.
The Crele Old English Game Bantam keeps that traditional game-bird style, but in miniature form. Cackle Hatchery® offers several Old English Game Bantam varieties, including Crele, Barred, Silver Duckwing, Golden Duckwing, Black Breasted Red, Spangled, Red Pyle, Wheaten, and more through its Old English Bantam Special.
Appearance and Characteristics
Crele Old English Game Bantams have a unique mix of warm, patterned color across the feathers. The crele pattern gives them a lively, eye-catching look that stands apart from solid-colored bantams.
These birds are small, clean-legged, active, and proud. Because they require less space and feed than standard chickens, they can work well in small backyard setups, bantam pens, and hobby flocks.
The Livestock Conservancy describes Old English Game chickens as having white skin, single combs, small wattles and earlobes, and shank color that varies by feather color. It also notes that hens lay small to medium white to tinted eggs.
Crele Old English Game Bantam vs Other Old English Game Bantams
Crele Old English Game Bantams share the same general breed type with other Old English Game Bantam varieties. The main difference is feather color.
Choose Crele Old English Game Bantams if you want a patterned, colorful bantam with a more varied look. Choose Barred if you prefer black-and-white barring, Silver Duckwing for silver and black tones, Golden Duckwing for warmer gold coloring, or Black Breasted Red for a traditional red-and-black game-bird look.
Cackle’s Old English Bantam Surplus Special can include Crele along with many other Old English Bantam varieties. However, assortment specials are hatchery choice and do not guarantee one specific color variety.
Old English Game Bantam vs Standard Old English Game
Old English Game Bantams are miniature versions of the standard Old English Game chicken. The bantam gives you the breed’s alert look, athletic build, and show-bird style in a much smaller bird.
Choose Crele Old English Game Bantams if you want a smaller pet, show bird, or backyard ornamental bantam. Choose the standard Crele Old English Game Fowl Chicken if you want the larger version with more body size and traditional breed presence.
For many backyard hobby keepers, the bantam size is easier to house and feed. In addition, the smaller size makes these birds a good choice for customers with limited coop space.
Egg Production and Utility
Crele Old English Game Bantams may lay small cream or tinted bantam eggs, but they are not production layers. Most customers choose them for beauty, personality, small size, and show value.
Because they require little feed and space, they can make practical pets for customers who want chickens for enjoyment rather than a full egg basket. With steady, gentle handling, some Old English Game Bantams become very tame and interactive.
If your main goal is high egg production, choose a standard-size laying breed. However, if you want a small, colorful bantam with ornamental value and pet potential, the Crele Old English Game Bantam is a strong fit.
Temperament and Suitability
Crele Old English Game Bantams can be tame, alert, and enjoyable to keep. They are active little birds, yet many become well behaved with regular handling.
Their small size helps them fit into small coops and bantam pens. Even so, they still need clean bedding, fresh water, good feed, secure housing, and room to scratch, perch, and dust bathe.
Because bantams are small, predator protection matters. Hawks, cats, raccoons, and other predators can pose a bigger risk to bantams than to large chickens. A covered run or secure setup can help keep them safe.
Show and Exhibition Notes
Old English Game Bantams remain popular show birds because they have a proud stance, athletic outline, and many color varieties. After cockfighting was banned in Great Britain, breeders kept the breed’s type and spirit alive through poultry exhibition.
The Crele variety gives exhibitors a colorful pattern to work with. For show projects, focus on type, condition, feather quality, stance, comb, color pattern, and overall presentation.
Customers interested in showing should check current APA or ABA standards and local show requirements. In some show settings, male Old English Game birds may be dubbed, so it is important to understand the rules before preparing birds for exhibition.

Breed History and Preservation
Old English Game chickens come from old British game-type fowl with a long history. The Livestock Conservancy explains that the breed descends from ancient fighting cocks and has changed little in shape or appearance over many centuries.
After cockfighting ended legally in Great Britain in 1849, breeders shifted toward exhibition. As a result, Old English Game chickens remained important as show birds, and the bantam version became especially popular because it carried the same type in a smaller bird.
Today, Crele Old English Game Bantams are best appreciated as ornamental, exhibition, and pet birds. They keep the old game-bird character in a small, colorful chicken that many backyard keepers can enjoy.
