Chocolate Egger™ Chickens
Breed Overview
The Chocolate Egger™ Chicken is a Cackle Hatchery® branded genetic line developed for one primary goal: producing hens that lay very dark brown eggs. If you want a backyard flock that adds rich chocolate-colored eggs to your basket, Chocolate Eggers™ are a strong choice.
Unlike traditional breeds that focus on a specific feather color, comb type, body shape, or exhibition standard, the Chocolate Egger™ program focuses first on eggshell strength and deep eggshell color. Feather color and body type are not the main priority in this breeding line. Instead, Cackle Hatchery® selects for hens that can produce a very dark brown bloom over the eggshell.
Cackle Hatchery® lists Chocolate Egger™ chickens as an egg-laying line with dark brown eggs in the #7 to #9 range, good production of 200+ eggs as an estimate, and a Cackle Hatchery® Poultry Breeding Farm bloodline developed since 2019.
Appearance and Characteristics
Chocolate Egger™ chickens may vary in feather color and body type because this line is selected for egg color rather than uniform appearance. However, most birds are feathered in shades of brown, and most males and females will have some feathering on their legs.
Expected traits may include:
- Shades of brown feathering
- Some feathering on the legs
- Medium to large egg size
- Very dark brown egg potential
- Strong eggshell focus
- Cackle Hatchery® branded genetics
- Useful backyard laying ability
- Variation in appearance from bird to bird
Customers should not expect every Chocolate Egger™ to look identical. Instead, the value of this line is in the dark egg genetics and the rich color it can bring to a backyard egg basket.
Egg Color and Production
Chocolate Egger™ hens are bred for very dark brown eggs with a deep bloom. Cackle Hatchery® lists the egg shell color as dark brown #7 to #9 range, which places this line among Cackle’s dark brown egg layer offerings.
Egg production can average from 180 to 260 eggs per year, with egg sizes ranging from medium to large. Actual production can vary by hen, feed, daylight, weather, season, age, and overall flock management.
Dark egg color can also vary through the laying cycle. As with other dark brown egg layers, the earliest eggs in a laying cycle may be darker, while later eggs may lighten over time. Even so, Chocolate Eggers™ are bred specifically to help customers build a richer, darker egg basket.
What Makes Chocolate Egger™ Chickens Special?
Chocolate Eggers™ are special because they are part of Cackle Hatchery’s branded “Egger” lines. These lines are created for customers who care about eggshell color and egg basket variety.
The Chocolate Egger™ line is focused on:
- Dark brown egg color
- Strong eggshell quality
- Medium to large eggs
- Useful laying ability
- Backyard flock value
- Egg basket color variety
This makes them a great option for customers who want dark eggs without needing a strict exhibition breed or uniform feather type.
Chocolate Egger™ vs Marans
Chocolate Eggers™ and Marans are both connected with dark brown eggs, but they are not the same.
A Chocolate Egger™ is a Cackle Hatchery® branded genetic line selected mainly for dark brown egg color and eggshell strength. Feather color and body type can vary.
A Marans is a recognized breed group known for dark brown eggs, French or English type, and specific breed traits depending on variety. French Marans typically have lightly feathered legs, while English Marans are clean-legged.
Choose Chocolate Egger™ chickens if your main goal is rich dark brown egg color and you are flexible on appearance.
Choose Marans if you want a specific breed variety, breed type, and Marans heritage along with dark egg potential.
Chocolate Egger™ vs Dark Brown Egg Female Surplus
Chocolate Eggers™ are also included among Cackle’s dark brown egg layer options. Cackle’s Dark Brown Egg Female Surplus Special may include breeds such as French Marans, Barnevelders, and Chocolate Eggers™, depending on availability.
Choose Chocolate Egger™ chickens if you specifically want this Cackle-branded dark egg line.
Choose Dark Brown Egg Female Surplus if you want a hatchery-choice assortment of female dark brown egg layers and are flexible on which breeds or lines you receive.
Chocolate Egger™ vs Speckled Egger™
Chocolate Eggers™ and Speckled Eggers™ are both Cackle Hatchery® specialty egg-color offerings, but they focus on different egg looks.
A Chocolate Egger™ is bred for very dark brown eggs with a rich chocolate-colored bloom.
A Speckled Egger™ is bred for dark brown eggs with darker speckling or spots. Cackle describes Speckled Egger™ eggs as shades of dark brown with dark spots, where no two eggs look exactly alike.
Choose Chocolate Egger™ chickens if you want deep dark brown eggs.
Choose Speckled Egger™ chickens if you want dark eggs with unique speckled patterns.
Chocolate Egger™ vs Colored Egg Layers
Chocolate Eggers™ are part of the larger world of specialty egg-color chickens. They are best for customers who want dark brown eggs rather than blue, green, olive, or cream eggs.
Choose Chocolate Egger™ chickens if you want:
- Dark brown eggs
- Chocolate egg basket color
- Medium to large eggs
- A Cackle-branded egg color line
- Strong shell selection
- A flock addition focused on egg color
Choose Olive Egger™ chickens if you want olive green eggs.
Choose Easter Egger™ chickens if you want a more varied colored egg layer.
Choose Blue Egger™ hatching eggs or Ameraucana-type blue egg layers if you want blue eggs.
Cackle’s Colored Egg Layers category notes that colored egg layers typically hatch and ship from February through September, with booking available as early as November.
Is the Chocolate Egger™ Chicken Right for Your Flock?
Choose Chocolate Egger™ chickens if you want:
- Very dark brown eggs
- A Cackle Hatchery® branded Egger line
- Medium to large egg size
- Good laying potential
- Strong eggshell selection
- A useful backyard egg layer
- A dark egg basket addition
- Birds where egg color matters more than feather uniformity
However, consider another breed if you want a standardized show bird, predictable feather color, or a specific breed type. In short, Chocolate Eggers™ are best for customers who want rich dark eggs and are comfortable with variation in appearance.
Care and Housing Tips
Chocolate Egger™ chickens need the same dependable care as other standard-size laying chickens. They do best with clean housing, secure fencing, balanced feed, fresh water, and predator protection.
For best results, provide:
- A dry, well-ventilated coop
- Predator-resistant fencing
- Clean bedding
- Fresh water at all times
- Balanced chick starter and age-appropriate feed
- Nest boxes for medium to large eggs
- Enough roosting space
- Shade and airflow during hot weather
- Protection from drafts and damp bedding in cold weather
- Oyster shell or calcium access once hens begin laying
Because Chocolate Eggers™ are selected for eggshell strength and color, nutrition matters. A balanced layer feed, clean water, and proper calcium support can help hens produce strong shells and steady eggs.
Hatching Egg Option
Cackle Hatchery® also offers Chocolate Egger™ Hatching Eggs at limited times. Cackle’s hatching egg listing describes Chocolate Egger™ as a genetic breeding line focused on hens that produce very dark brown bloom over their eggs, with a strict focus on egg color rather than feather color or body type.
Choose Chocolate Egger™ chicks if you want live day-old birds. Choose hatching eggs if you want the experience of incubating and hatching your own dark brown egg layer chicks.
