Buff Orpington Chicken (Exhibition Type)
Breed Overview and Origin
The Buff Orpington Chicken (Exhibition Type) is a large English show strain known for smooth buff plumage, calm temperament, brown eggs, broodiness, white skin, and classic Orpington body type. If you want a Buff Orpington bred for exhibition quality rather than production-focused laying, this strain is an excellent choice.
The Orpington breed was developed in Orpington, England, by William Cook in the late 1800s. Cook first developed the Black Orpington, and additional color varieties followed. The Buff Orpington became one of the most beloved Orpington colors and remains the most popular variety today.
In the United States, Buff Orpingtons first appeared at exhibition in 1899. Three years later, the American Poultry Association admitted the Buff Orpington to the Standard of Perfection in 1902. Buff became the first of the four standard Orpington color varieties: Buff, Black, White, and Blue.
Cackle Hatchery® Breeding Farms obtained its outstanding show-quality Buff Orpington Exhibition Type breeding stock from well-known Orpington exhibitor Fred Farthing. This makes the strain a strong option for customers who care about show type, body shape, plumage quality, and classic Buff Orpington appearance. Cackle’s Exhibition Type listing confirms this product is sold as baby chicks only and ships seasonally from February through September.
Appearance and Characteristics
Exhibition Type Buff Orpingtons should have the large, rounded, balanced appearance that makes the breed so recognizable. The Orpington Club breed standard describes the Orpington body as deep, broad, and cobby, with a short curved back and a broad, deep, well-rounded breast.
For exhibition, proper plumage is essential. Buff Orpington feathers should be broad and smooth, without excessive length or excessive fluff. The skin, beak, shanks, and feet are white.
Key Exhibition Type traits include:
- Smooth buff plumage
- Large, broad body
- Calm disposition
- White skin, beak, shanks, and feet
- Medium single comb
- Brown eggs
- Broody-hen potential
- Classic English Orpington heritage
- Show-focused body type and feather quality
Mature Buff Orpingtons are large chickens. Exhibition-type males may weigh about 10 pounds, while mature females may weigh about 8 pounds. Because of their size, they need adequate coop space, roost space, and roomy nest boxes.
Exhibition Type vs Production Type Buff Orpington
Cackle Hatchery® offers both Buff Orpington Exhibition Type and Buff Orpington Production Type. These strains serve different customer goals.
Choose Exhibition Type Buff Orpingtons if you want birds selected for:
- Show appearance
- Proper buff plumage
- Larger body size
- Traditional Orpington type
- Calm handling
- Breed-standard qualities
- Poultry exhibition projects
Choose Production Type Buff Orpingtons if your main goals are backyard egg production, flock utility, and a lower-cost brown egg layer. Cackle’s Production Type Buff Orpington line has been developed by Cackle Hatchery® Poultry Breeding Farm since 1979.
The simple difference is this: Exhibition Type is bred for show quality, plumage, and body type. Production Type is bred more for practical backyard laying and flock utility.
Egg Production and Brown Eggs
Buff Orpington hens lay medium-sized eggs in shades of light to dark brown. Egg shade can vary by individual hen, age, season, and stage in the laying cycle.
Because this is an Exhibition Type strain, customers should not expect the same egg output as a production-focused layer. However, Exhibition Type Buff Orpingtons can still provide useful brown eggs while offering the size, beauty, and calm temperament customers love.
The Livestock Conservancy notes that Orpingtons historically earned recognition for fast growth, egg production, and table qualities, which helped make the breed a valuable dual-purpose chicken.
Temperament and Broodiness
Buff Orpingtons are famous for their calm disposition. Even though they are large birds, they are generally gentle, steady, and easy to enjoy in a backyard flock.
Hens tend toward broodiness and can make excellent mothers. This makes Exhibition Type Buff Orpingtons appealing for customers who appreciate natural chick-raising instincts, heritage breed behavior, and family-friendly chickens.
This strain can work well for:
- Poultry exhibition projects
- Family backyard flocks
- Brown egg layer flocks
- Heritage breed enthusiasts
- Customers who want calm chickens
- Keepers who value broody hens
- Small farms and homesteads
- Flocks where size, beauty, and temperament matter
However, customers who want the highest egg output per feed cost may prefer a production-focused breed or Cackle’s Production Type Buff Orpington.
Buff Orpington vs Other Orpington Varieties
Buff is the most popular Orpington color and one of the most recognizable backyard chicken varieties in the United States. It shares the same general Orpington traits as other varieties: large size, calm temperament, brown eggs, broodiness, and dual-purpose value.
Choose Buff Orpington Exhibition Type if you want the classic buff color, large show-style body, and Fred Farthing exhibition-stock influence.
If you prefer black plumage, compare Black Orpington chickens.
For customers who like blue-gray plumage, Blue Orpington chickens may be a better fit.
If you want rare royal color history, review Jubilee Orpington chickens.

Buff Orpington Exhibition Type vs Buff Orpington Bantam
Customers who like Buff Orpingtons but want a smaller bird may also enjoy Buff Orpington Bantams.
A Buff Orpington Exhibition Type is a standard-size large fowl bird. Mature birds are large, broad, and substantial.
A Buff Orpington Bantam is the miniature version. Bantams can be a better fit for customers with limited space or poultry keepers who enjoy smaller exhibition birds.
Choose the Exhibition Type large fowl if you want the full-size show bird. Choose the bantam if you want classic Buff Orpington charm in a smaller package.
Started Pullets and Hatching Egg Options
Cackle Hatchery® also offers related Buff Orpington options for customers with different flock goals.
Customers who want older females closer to laying age can compare Buff Orpington Started Pullets. These are Production Type birds, not Exhibition Type.
At limited times of the year, Cackle also offers Buff Orpington Hatching Eggs. These are also Production Type, not Exhibition Type.
Choose Exhibition Type chicks if you want show-focused Buff Orpingtons. Choose started pullets if your main goal is production-type females closer to laying age. Choose hatching eggs if you want the experience of incubating and hatching Production Type Buff Orpingtons.
Is the Buff Orpington Exhibition Type Right for Your Flock?
Choose Buff Orpington Exhibition Type chickens if you want:
- A large English chicken breed
- Classic buff plumage
- Show-focused body type
- Fred Farthing exhibition-stock influence
- Calm, gentle temperament
- Medium brown eggs
- Hens with broody potential
- Excellent mothering instincts
- A dual-purpose heritage breed
- A bird suited for exhibition and backyard beauty
However, consider Production Type Buff Orpingtons if your main goal is practical egg production. In short, Exhibition Type Buff Orpingtons are best for customers who want classic beauty, show potential, calm handling, and traditional Orpington character.
Care and Housing Tips
Buff Orpington Exhibition Type chickens need dependable care and enough space for their large body size. They do best with a clean coop, secure run, proper feed, fresh water, and predator protection.
For best results, provide:
- A dry, well-ventilated coop
- Predator-resistant fencing
- Clean bedding
- Fresh water at all times
- Balanced chick starter and age-appropriate feed
- Wide roosting space for large birds
- Roomy nest boxes for brown eggs
- Shade and airflow during hot weather
- Protection from drafts and damp bedding in cold weather
- Enough run space to keep plumage clean and healthy
Because Exhibition Type birds are valued for appearance, clean housing, good nutrition, and gentle handling can help maintain feather quality and overall show condition.
