Buff Ameraucana Chicken
Breed Overview and Origin
The Buff Ameraucana Chicken is a beautiful large fowl Ameraucana variety known for golden buff feathering, slate-blue legs, bluish eggs, pea comb, muffs, beard, docile temperament, and useful broody-hen potential. If you want a true Ameraucana with soft buff color and blue egg appeal, this variety can be an excellent choice for a backyard flock, colored egg basket, or small breeding program.
The large fowl Buff Ameraucana variety was created by Master Breeder John W. Blehm, an important name in modern Ameraucana breeding. Cackle Hatchery® is proud to offer Buff Ameraucana chicks and began offering this variety in 2018. Cackle also notes that its production-type Buff Ameraucana bloodline has been developed by Cackle Hatchery® Poultry Breeding Farm since 2017.
Buff Ameraucanas are true Ameraucanas, not Easter Eggers™ and not Araucanas. They carry the standard Ameraucana traits customers look for, including muffs, beard, pea comb, slate or blue legs, and blue eggshell genetics.
Appearance and Characteristics
Buff Ameraucana chickens have warm golden buff plumage that contrasts beautifully with slate-blue legs. They are fairly fluffy-feathered birds, giving them a soft, rounded look while still keeping the classic Ameraucana type.
Standard Ameraucana features include:
- Pea comb
- Muffs and beard
- Slate-blue leg color
- Full tail
- Bluish egg potential
- General-purpose body type
- Distinctive Ameraucana appearance
The Ameraucana Alliance describes Ameraucanas as general-purpose fowl with distinctive blue eggshell coloration. It also notes that large fowl Ameraucanas belong to the APA All Other Standard Breeds class and lists standard large fowl weights at 6½ pounds for cocks, 5½ pounds for hens, 5½ pounds for cockerels, and 4½ pounds for pullets.
Because Buff Ameraucanas combine an attractive feather color with true Ameraucana traits, they are especially appealing for customers who want both beauty and egg color.
Recognition and Ameraucana Breed Type
Buff is an APA-recognized Ameraucana variety. The Ameraucana Alliance confirms that Ameraucana large fowl are shown in the APA All Other Standard Breeds class and that Ameraucanas have distinctive blue eggshell coloration. It also lists absence of beard and muffs, as well as presence of ear tufts, as disqualifications.
This matters because many customers confuse Ameraucanas with Easter Eggers™, Americanas, or Araucanas. A true Buff Ameraucana should show correct breed traits, including muffs, beard, pea comb, tail, slate-blue legs, and blue egg genetics.
The Ameraucana Breeders Club exists to encourage continued improvement of Ameraucana bantams and large fowl through breeding, exhibition, and education. Its public resources and photo galleries include Buff large fowl examples, which can help customers understand the variety’s correct appearance.
Egg Color and Laying Expectations
Buff Ameraucana hens lay bluish eggs, making them a great choice for customers who want a colorful egg basket. Egg color can vary by individual hen, and some Ameraucana lines may occasionally produce eggs that lean light green.
Customers should choose Buff Ameraucanas for their combination of blue egg potential, attractive plumage, and true breed identity. They are not the same as mixed colored egg layers, which may produce a wider range of shell colors.
For customers comparing blue egg breeds, Cackle’s Best Blue Egg Layers article is a helpful resource.
Temperament and Broodiness
Buff Ameraucanas are known for being very docile. Their calm temperament makes them appealing for backyard flocks, small farms, and customers who want a beautiful blue egg layer that is easier to enjoy around the coop.
Cackle’s original description also notes that Buff Ameraucanas can make good broody hens. That means hens may sit on eggs and help raise chicks when conditions are right. Broodiness can vary by individual hen, season, and flock setup, but this trait can be valuable for customers who appreciate natural mothering behavior.
This variety can work well for:
- Backyard blue egg flocks
- Colored egg basket projects
- Ameraucana enthusiasts
- Families wanting docile chickens
- Keepers who like broody hens
- Small breeding programs
- Customers who want true Ameraucana traits
- Flocks with other calm, standard-size chickens
However, customers who want maximum egg production may prefer a production layer. Buff Ameraucanas are best for customers who value blue eggs, breed identity, temperament, and attractive color together.
Buff Ameraucana vs Easter Egger™
Buff Ameraucanas and Easter Eggers™ are often confused because both can be connected with colored eggs. However, they are not the same.
A Buff Ameraucana is a true Ameraucana variety with specific breed traits, including muffs, beard, pea comb, slate-blue legs, tail, and blue egg genetics.
An Easter Egger™ chicken is usually a mixed or non-standard colored egg layer. Easter Eggers™ can be excellent backyard chickens, but they may vary widely in body type, feather color, and egg color.
Choose Buff Ameraucana chickens if you want an APA-recognized Ameraucana variety with golden buff plumage and bluish eggs.
Choose Easter Egger™ chickens if you want a fun colored egg layer and are flexible on exact egg shade or breed type.

Buff Ameraucana vs Other Ameraucana Varieties
Buff Ameraucanas share the same general Ameraucana traits as other Cackle Ameraucana varieties. The main difference is feather color.
For customers who want golden buff plumage, slate-blue legs, docile temperament, bluish egg potential, and APA-recognized Ameraucana type, Buff Ameraucana is a strong fit.
If you prefer blue-gray plumage, compare Blue Ameraucana chickens.
For customers who like soft lavender-gray plumage, Lavender Ameraucana chickens may be a better match.
If you want a classic show favorite with solid black adult plumage, review Black Ameraucana chickens.
Customers who want to compare multiple Ameraucana options can review Cackle’s Ameraucana Chickens resource, which features John W. Blehm’s Ameraucana book with chapters on the Ameraucana Standard, eggs, housing, health, genetics, breeding, hatching, and exhibiting.
Important Note About Ameraucana Sexing and Breed Expectations
Ameraucana varieties can be harder to vent sex than many other breeds. Customers ordering females should review the current Cackle Hatchery® product details and ordering notes before checkout, especially if local rules do not allow roosters.
Additionally, true Ameraucanas should not have ear tufts. The Ameraucana Alliance lists presence of ear tufts as a disqualification, while absence of beard and muffs is also a disqualification. This distinction helps separate Ameraucanas from Araucanas and mixed colored egg layers.
Is the Buff Ameraucana Chicken Right for Your Flock?
Choose Buff Ameraucana chickens if you want:
- A true Ameraucana variety
- Bluish egg potential
- Golden buff feathering
- Slate-blue legs
- Muffs and beard
- Pea comb
- Docile temperament
- Broody-hen potential
- APA-recognized Ameraucana type
- A variety created by John W. Blehm
However, consider another breed if you need very high egg production, a lower-cost colored egg layer, or a flock bird where exact breed standard does not matter. In short, Buff Ameraucanas are best for customers who want blue eggs, docile temperament, rare color, and true Ameraucana identity.
Care and Housing Tips
Buff Ameraucanas need the same dependable care as other standard-size chickens. They do best with a clean coop, secure run, proper feed, fresh water, and predator protection.
For best results, provide:
- A dry, well-ventilated coop
- Predator-resistant fencing
- Clean bedding
- Fresh water at all times
- Balanced chick starter and age-appropriate feed
- Enough roosting space
- Nest boxes when pullets near laying age
- Shade and airflow during hot weather
- Protection from drafts and damp bedding in cold weather
- Enough run space to maintain good feather condition
Because Buff Ameraucanas are fairly fluffy-feathered, clean bedding and dry housing help keep birds looking their best. Their pea combs can also be helpful in colder climates, although all chickens still need dry, draft-free shelter.
