Brassy Back Old English Bantam Chicken
Breed Overview and Origin
The Brassy Back Old English Bantam chicken is a miniature Old English Game variety known for its bold black-and-gold feathering, small size, and lively show-bird presence. If you want a bantam that looks sharp in an exhibition pen but still fits well in a small backyard setup, this variety is a strong choice.
Old English Game Bantams come from the larger Old English Game breed family. Unlike true bantams, which have no large-fowl counterpart, Old English Game Bantams are miniature versions of a standard-size breed. Cackle Hatchery’s guide to True Bantam Chicken Breeds is a helpful resource for understanding that difference.
Today, customers usually choose Old English Game Bantams for exhibition, pets, 4-H, and small hobby flocks. Cackle Hatchery’s Bantam Chickens for Sale category notes that bantams are miniature chickens often kept for pets, showing, broody hens, and small backyards where space is limited. Cackle also notes that many bantam breeds and colors hatch and ship from February through August.
Brassy Back Old English Bantams work best for customers who enjoy small, active chickens with confident personalities. They do not need much feed or space compared with standard-size chickens, but they still need secure housing, predator protection, and gentle handling.
Appearance and Characteristics
Brassy Back Old English Bantams have beautiful black and gold feathering that gives them a rich, polished appearance. The “brassy back” color pattern creates a warm contrast across the bird’s body and makes the variety stand out among other Old English Game Bantams.
Like other Old English Bantams, they have a compact body, alert posture, clean legs, and classic game-bantam type. Their small size makes them practical for bantam coops, show cages, and small poultry setups. However, they are still active little birds, so they need enough room to move, perch, and stay engaged.
Cackle Hatchery® lists the Brassy Back Old English Game Bantam among its bantam chicken offerings, along with other Old English Game Bantam varieties such as Black, Blue, Black Breasted Red, Brown Red, Crele, Ginger Red, Golden Duckwing, Red Pyle, Self Blue, Silver Duckwing, and Spangled.
Because they are small, Brassy Back Old English Bantams need good predator protection. A secure coop, safe run, and well-planned fencing help protect them from hawks, cats, raccoons, and other threats.
Brassy Back Old English Bantam vs Other Old English Bantams: How to Choose
Brassy Back Old English Bantams share the same miniature Old English Game type as other varieties. The main difference is color.
Choose Brassy Back Old English Bantam if you want a small show bantam with black and gold feathering, active personality, and classic Old English Game character.
Choose Black Old English Bantam chickens if you prefer solid black plumage. Cackle’s Black Old English Bantam notes that some white juvenile feathers can appear in early feathering but should turn solid black by about 6 months.
Choose Blue Old English Bantam chickens if you prefer blue-tinted plumage and color-breeding interest.
Choose Spangled Old English Game Bantam chickens if you like a more patterned, speckled-looking show bird. Cackle lists Spangled Old English Game Bantams as baby chicks only, with no sexing available.
Choose Crele Old English Game Bantam chickens if you prefer colorful crele feathering. Cackle describes Crele Old English Game Bantams as small, tame bantams with pet or show appeal.
For customers who enjoy variety, the Old English Game Bantam Baby Chick Special can include Brassy Back along with many other Old English Bantam varieties. Cackle notes that the special may include Ginger Red, Silver Duckwing, Spangled, White, Blue, Black, Mille Fleur, Crele, Self Blue, Wheaten, Splash, Black Breasted Red, Brown Red, Barred, Brassy Back, Golden Duckwing, or Red Pyle, depending on what hatches.
Egg Production and Utility
Brassy Back Old English Bantams serve mainly as ornamental, pet, and exhibition chickens. Customers should choose them for small size, show potential, personality, and black-and-gold color rather than heavy egg production.
Hens may lay small white or tinted eggs, but Old English Game Bantams do not rank as production layers. One bantam breed reference describes Old English Game Bantams as primarily exhibition birds that may lay moderate numbers of small cream to tinted white eggs.
Because these are bantams, they also do not serve as meat birds. Their value comes from exhibition appeal, pet potential, small-flock enjoyment, and the pleasure of keeping a lively miniature chicken.
Temperament and Suitability
Brassy Back Old English Bantams are known for being tame and easy to enjoy when handled regularly. The original Cackle Hatchery® description notes that many can become tame enough to rest on a person’s shoulder or arm. That makes them appealing for customers who want a small bird with personality.
Still, these are game-type bantams, so individual temperament can vary. Many birds handle well, but roosters may act more territorial during breeding season. Adult supervision is always smart when children handle any chicken, especially a rooster.
This variety can work well for:
- Poultry exhibitors
- Bantam hobby flocks
- 4-H and youth poultry projects with guidance
- Small backyard coops
- Families who want a small pet chicken
- Keepers who enjoy active, alert bantams
- Customers who want a black-and-gold show bantam
A different breed may suit you better if you mainly want heavy egg production, meat, or a very calm lap-style chicken. Brassy Back Old English Bantams shine when customers want a small, attractive, show-type bird with plenty of character.
Is the Brassy Back Old English Bantam Chicken Right for Your Flock?
Choose Brassy Back Old English Bantam chickens if you want:

Consider another breed if you want steady egg production, a meat bird, or a very low-energy flock companion. Brassy Back Old English Bantams fit best with customers who enjoy bantams, show birds, and lively small chickens.
Breed History and Preservation
Old English Game chickens have a long history connected to old British and European game fowl. After cockfighting became illegal in Britain in 1849, breeders continued keeping Old English Game birds mainly for exhibition and breed preservation.
The bantam version became popular because it preserves the look and character of the larger Old English Game in a much smaller bird. Over time, breeders developed many color varieties, making Old English Game Bantams one of the most varied bantam groups in exhibition poultry.
Cackle Hatchery® continues to offer both standard and bantam Old English Game options. For customers who enjoy heritage-style exhibition poultry, Brassy Back Old English Bantams offer more than small size. They connect a backyard or show flock to a long tradition of game fowl type, bantam exhibition, and careful color breeding.
Recognition and Availability
Old English Game Bantams have a long-standing place in American poultry exhibition, with many recognized color varieties. Cackle Hatchery® includes Brassy Back among its Old English Game Bantam offerings and also includes it as a possible variety in the Old English Game Bantam Baby Chick Special.
Cackle Hatchery® lists Brassy Back Old English Game Bantams as baby chicks, and current availability can vary by hatch date, season, egg numbers, and order timing. The Bantam Chickens for Sale category notes that many bantam breeds hatch and ship from February through August.
Customers should check the Chicken Availability Chart before ordering because bantam availability can change throughout the season.
