Barred Rock Started Pullet

Product Overview

The Barred Rock Started Pullet is a 15 to 22 week old female chicken that is close to laying age and ready to become a productive addition to a backyard flock. This is a great choice for customers who want to skip the baby chick brooder stage and start with an older pullet that has already been raised with care.

Cackle Hatchery® offers Barred Rock Started Pullets as female juveniles. Each pullet is priced at $46.00, with a maximum of 2 per order only. Shipping and handling is $230.00 for 1 bird and $275.00 for 2 birds.

These started pullets are vaccinated for Marek’s disease at no additional charge. They are also fed non-GMO feed from day one, handled by people to help reduce flightiness, and raised in large areas with other birds.

Why Choose Started Pullets?

Started pullets are ideal for customers who want female chickens without raising day-old chicks. Since these birds are already 15 to 22 weeks old, they are much closer to laying age than baby chicks.

They can be a helpful option for customers who want:

Female chickens already past the fragile chick stage
A shorter wait for eggs
Pullets raised with human interaction
Birds already used to being around other poultry
A brown egg layer for a backyard flock
A classic American breed with family-friendly appeal

Cackle’s grown fowl category explains that all started pullets are between 15 and 22 weeks old and have been vaccinated for Marek’s disease at no additional cost.

Appearance and Breed Characteristics

Barred Rocks are one of the most recognizable Plymouth Rock varieties. They have black-and-white barred feathering, a single comb, and a sturdy body type that has made them popular for generations.

This breed was recognized by the American Standard of Perfection as a distinct pure chicken breed in 1874. Many customers know Barred Rocks as the kind of chickens that “Grandma used to raise” because they have long been associated with dependable farm flocks, brown eggs, and backyard friendliness.

Barred Rocks are also excellent winter and summer brown egg layers. Their practical value, calm nature, and classic appearance make them one of the most popular brown egg breeds for families and backyard poultry keepers.

Egg Production and Backyard Value

Barred Rock Started Pullets are a strong choice for customers who want dependable brown egg layers. Since these birds are older than day-old chicks, they may begin laying sooner after arrival, depending on age, season, daylight, and individual development.

They are useful for customers who want a productive backyard flock without waiting months for baby chicks to mature. Their combination of hardiness, egg production, and friendly temperament makes them a good fit for families, small farms, and customers new to chickens.

Temperament and Family-Friendliness

Barred Rocks are known for being friendly, steady, and good around children. These started pullets have also had human interaction, which helps make them less flighty than birds raised with little handling.

Because they have been raised in large areas with other birds, they can be a good addition to a backyard flock when introduced carefully. As with any new chicken, customers should allow a transition period and monitor flock behavior as birds establish their place in the pecking order.

This product is a strong fit for customers who want a kid-friendly chicken, a dependable brown egg layer, and a classic breed with a calm backyard personality.

Barred Rock vs Barred Plymouth Rock

“Barred Rock” is the common short name for the Barred Plymouth Rock Chicken. Customers may see both names used, but they refer to the same general breed variety.

Cackle also offers 1-day-old Barred Rock chicks for customers who want to raise chicks from the start. For customers interested in a show-focused strain, Cackle offers Barred Plymouth Rock Exhibition Type chicks. Cackle’s Barred Rock chick page describes the breed as a hardy, friendly brown egg layer and classic backyard flock choice.

Choose started pullets if you want older female birds closer to laying age. Choose day-old chicks if you want a lower starting price, more order flexibility, or the experience of raising chicks yourself.

Barred Rock vs Dominique Chicken

Some customers confuse the Barred Rock with the Dominique Chicken because both have barred feathering and a classic American farm look.

The easiest difference is the comb. Barred Rocks have a single, straight comb. Dominiques have a rose comb. The feather pattern is also different. Barred Rocks usually have a straighter barred pattern, while Dominiques tend to show a slight V pattern in the barring.

Both are good winter chickens and can make good pet chickens. Customers who want a deeper comparison should read Cackle’s blog What’s the Difference Between a Barred Rock and a Dominique?.

Started Pullet Guarantee and Refund Note

Cackle Hatchery® does not offer reshipments for these birds. Only a refund of the bird cost is offered under the started pullet policy.

Customers should review Cackle’s Chicken Guarantees and Policies page before ordering. The policy page includes a specific Started Pullets Guarantee section, along with broader live poultry shipping and care policies.

Because these are live juvenile birds, customers should be ready to pick them up promptly, provide safe housing, and reduce stress during the transition.
