Breed History and Origin
The Barred Rock Bantam chicken is the miniature version of the Barred Plymouth Rock Standard breed and has made significant progress in recent decades through the work of dedicated poultry breeders across the United States. This bantam variety was recognized by the American Standard of Perfection in 1940 within the Single Comb Clean Legged Bantam class. As a smaller version of one of America’s most well-known heritage breeds, it carries both strong production qualities and exhibition appeal. Cackle Hatchery® Poultry Breeding Farm has been developing its bloodline of Barred Rock Bantam chickens since 1982.
Appearance and Breed Characteristics
Barred Rock Bantam chickens display the classic black and white barred feather pattern that mirrors their standard-sized counterparts. They have a balanced body shape with a single comb and clean legs. Mature hens typically weigh about 32 ounces, while roosters average around 36 ounces. Pullets generally weigh about 28 ounces, and cockerels about 32 ounces. Their uniform barring and traditional appearance make them a strong contender in exhibition settings.
Egg Production and Performance
Barred Rock Bantam hens lay small brown bantam-sized eggs, and egg production is considered good for a bantam breed. They serve well as a backyard egg layer while also maintaining ornamental and show qualities.
Temperament and Flock Suitability
